Taken from the iconic production by the BBC and first broadcast in 1982. So fitting that such an English Baroque reproduction should take place in Westminster Abbey. I still have the entire production on VHS tape. If anyone can show me how to translate into digital I will gladly post more clips on here.

classic1306, just to let you know. you're absolutely accurate with this. Paul Elliot is singing in Baroque pitch. There was once a famous English Tenor whom Handel praised in his latter years as a composer. His name was John Beard and he became his soloist in Messiah and most of Handel's oratorio till he died.

oh yeah John Beard was only 19 years old. Imagine a voice of a nineteen year old tenor and Paul Elliot had that sound liken to John Beard.

Yes this a tremendous rendition where Orchestra and Choir are re-producing a Baroque performance. Most (if not all) orchestral instruments are original Baroque items i.e the trumpets have no valves. Truly awesome.

This is the most lacklustre and passionless rendition of this that I have ever heard.
This has nothing to do with being authenically Baroque. There is no reason why someone who wishes to sound authentic, needs to sound this bland.
There are several notes sung here, that are just not in the score. If you are going to sing this
with all the exuberance of an accountancy seminar, then you certainly do not have the liberty to improvise your own notes, jazz style.

With the passionles... i think you might think that because he has a very light tenor sound... but as for his "improvised notes"... umm... do you know much about opera? in calssical music its called cadenza's, and most, if not all, classical singers do it to classical music to have their own stamp on it... as many singers also do in contemporary musical theatre music and pop...

The Messiah is an oratorio not an opera.

if anybody really knew what they were talking about they would be referencing the score. at certain it says to ad lib. that is what he is doing. Although maybe not completely in the baroque style, it is what the composer wrote. and to further, there is not one person who is a expert on baroque performance style, because there is nobody alive today that was there and there are no recordings, therefore when baroque music is performed it is done to the best knowledge of the performer.

Well, we have no recordings for singers, but there are musical clocks with ornamentation on them, so we do know about the notes and rhythms, at least.

Isa40Comfort ye,comfort ye my people, saith your God.Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned:for she hath received of the LORD'S hand double for all her sins. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness,Prepare ye the way of the LORD,make straight in the desert a highway for our God.Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low:and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain
