if you want to calulate the horizion figure out the angle of vision to the horizion over 107,000 at a right angle. I think the Trig function you would use shold be the cosine function

It's actually just a simple application of the Pythagorean theorem. (r_earth + altitude)^2 - r_earth^2 = horizon_distance^2. At 107000 ft, the horizon distance is about 646 km

I don't think there is enough info. to use pythagorean thrm. but in order to find it you would at least need two of the sides. I see what you are talking about if the r_earth reffers to the radius.

There's enough info. Didn't you see the equation I provided? If we know the radius of earth (we do) and the altitude (we do), then we can form a right triangle. The hypotenuse is a line from the center of earth to the balloon and the legs are a line from the balloon to the horizon (so its tangent to the horizon) and a line from the center of the earth to that point. By definition a line tangent to a circle (or sphere) is perpendicular to a radius to the point of tangency.
