Funny Games comparison: eggs scene

Uploaded by: egyptiansushi
Video Description:
1997 German film on the left (and left speaker), 2008 American film on the right (and right speaker on "higher quality" if it decides to up).
I decided to go with one of the more mundane, earlier scenes. I doubt anyone finds the side-by-side thing nearly as amusing as me, so there's not really any reason for me to make any more. But, on the off chance you do enjoy it, and have a scene in mind you want to see side-by-side, just say so in the comments, and sure thing.

I watched the German film first and just recently the U.S. version, and personally I believe that the actors were much better in the original.

SO theres an austrian, german AND US version?
The Austrian one is ... ( 2 months ago by egyptiansushi)
The Austrian one is in German. It is a film in German, but it is Austrian. The adjective German in the description is referring to the language.

lol, they ARE identical. wouldn't it be easier just to dub it instead of maing a whole new movie?
i mean "vanilla sky" and "abre los ojos" are similiar, they are different interpretations of the same story, but the above is IDENTICAL

i like the way this comparison is done. i like the way you remove one of the videos to get it to sync back with the other version.
Funny Games is a great movie. A bit twisted, but great.
Thanks for this one ... ( 2 months ago by smorestes)
Thanks for this one -- the egg scene has had me curious for a while ever since I saw the original FG -- I mean why eggs and not milk or sugar or something? I still think that despite the overt similarities between the 1997 and 2008 versions that they are very different feeling movies. The original is much better at being a movie about the consumption of violence and the relationship between the director/audience/film. The latter, well not so much, more of a solid thriller really.

mike haneke wrote and directed both films... im sure he just wanted to stay true to his original story... they are both unique in their tones though... its weird for a director to remake his own film though, especially 10 years apart
I was not really ... ( 1 month ago by smorestes)
I was not really asking about why eggs reappear in the remake -- I was asking why eggs at all? To me, the egg scene is nothing short of pivotal: it foreshadows a good deal of what is to come later on in the movie and it signals a transfer in the balance of power from the holidaying family to the intruders. This got me thinking, could the scene have been done with some other item (e.g. milk etc.) or not? Also, why did Haneke choose eggs to tell this part of the story? And I'm still pondering...

Notice how the door opens towards the outside in the American version, too, despite the fact that American doors most often open towards the inside.

it's a screen door, which most definitely always open outsidewards.

The guys in the US version is so much hotter! And it is easier to follow the American version. Michael Pitt is such a good actor!

the mom in the new one is actually pretty hot too. what do paul and peter or whatever their names are say about her? no saggy something?
i think it's pretty ... ( 1 month ago by meleemaster1up)
i think it's pretty retarded how he did that. i mean you should make two of the exact movies out of one concept. and even though the second version was quite enjoyable, to me it's like double dipping. he should have at least let someone else direct the second one. i mean they're the exact same movies. a little greedy to try to make twice as much money by selling the same movie twice.
the eggs are good ... ( 1 month ago by meleemaster1up)
the eggs are good to use in this type of scene. they're round so they're easy to drop. they're messy so it's hard to clean up. the milk would have been cliche and the don't-cry-over-spilt-milk bit would've seemed naive. and sugar would have been stored in some sort of container. besides the 'ol neighbors coming over to borrow some sugar is over-used. i think the eggs were the right choice.
they say no jelly ... ( 1 month ago by dontbeapunk17)
they say no jelly rolls haha... i agree in a sense about double dipping but i think both films deliver a somewhat different tone... but it was a little unnecessary... i wonder what his reason was for doing that
i mean they're ... ( 1 month ago by meleemaster1up)
i mean they're directed ten years apart so they have to be a little different but as the video shows, they're pretty much frame-to-frame replicas with the exact same dialog.

that scene his hilarious!!!

The reason why the director did that is because he wanted to make a version of the movie for americans to watch. It really wasn't about profit or anything.

I'll never understand the point of making shot for shot remakes. Oh, yeah, maybe just hopes for financial gain. Other than that, artistically it's just waste of time.
