i wouldnt say disgrace, i mean it was up against lord of the rings which totally dominated the oscars. But i do agree it should have won best picture, it was a wonderfully made period piece and director peter weir need that oscar more than peter jackson.

This movie is the most important film in my life. Not only because I've really enjoyed it but also because is the movie i watched at the cinema the same day I' finished my chemotherapy treatment. ANd anyone who knows me can tell you that there are three importants things in my life: my family, my friends and Movies. I've wathced Master and commander with one of my best friends, my brother.

I'll add my voice to the chorus, too --- "M&C:TFSotW" should have won Best Picture, but it was up against "Return of the King", so what could you do? ("RotK"s Oscars really being for the whole trilogy) Mind you, I *love* what Peter Jackson did with Tolkien, but Weir did an equally wonderful job with O'Brian, too!

Enthralling story.
Wonderful casting & acting.
Simply beautiful soundtrack.
All mixed in with a refreshing dose of history, loyalty, & courage.
I'm glad there's no sequel to this film-- it doesn't need one. It has everything that made it a good movie the first time around. I could watch it over and over! (and of course, the scenery is quite nice as well if you know what I mean, lol).

Hi, Frazzld, and thank you! By the way, I recently re-read M&C (the actual first book), and then did some digging on film awards for 2004, and I'm still amazed that Russell Crowe was not even *nominated* for Best Actor --- he *nailed* Jack Aubrey! (Crowe *was* nominated for Best Actor in the Golden Globes).
