now that I have seen this wonderful film for a second time, I'm not destroying my fingernails with the suspense. :)
I enjoyed the conversation between Margaret and Dixon. Really goes to show how just one act of kindness Mrs. Hale showed to Dixon years ago can produce such strong loyalty- as opposed to the mill workers. I loved that contrast. Much as I am in love with Thornton, he really needs to have a heart at this point. Ah well, even the hottest guy has his flaws :))

I love the scene ... ( 2 months ago by AnnaRomanov)
I love the scene but if they added this beautiful passage from the book it would've been even better: He bore her into the
dining-room, and laid her on the sofa there; laid her down softly, and looking on her pure white face, the sense of what she
was to him came upon him so keenly that he spoke it out in his pain:
'Oh, my Margaret--my Margaret! no one can tell what you are to me! Dead--cold as you lie there, you are the only woman I ever loved! Oh, Margaret--Margaret!'

I really mean it. ... ( 1 month ago by Kybeline)
I really mean it. Half of it could be from the communist Russian Kino. And I have seen too much of that in my childhood, to enjoy it. I wonder how anybody believes, that all the poor, poor workers were so nice, intelligent and sensible and all the rich, educated, who had all the time to take care of themselves, werde so ugly, stupid and hateful, as for example Miss Thornton.
This is plain propaganda. I never liked Zola for such shit and I wanted to see, wether I would like to read Gaskell- no!
If you see the rest ... ( 1 month ago by tourn76)
If you see the rest you'll notice what you are saying isn't the case. The end clearly shows there are no "good" and no "bad" in this story, only missunderstandings.
Miss Thornton isn't depicted as ugly, stupid and hateful. Nor is Mr Thorntons mother. She is just afraid of loosing everything and ending up in the situasion she was in when her huspand killed himself.

Yeah, I absolutely ... ( 1 month ago by Kampfelch007)
Yeah, I absolutely agree, they should have put that passage in as well. It's rather significant, isn't it? This way you can also see how his feelings towards her develope... but the scene would have been lovely with Richard Armitage playing it!

Elizabeth Gaskell ... ( 3 weeks ago by quibily)
Elizabeth Gaskell wrote North and South as a reaction to her own experience from living in Manchester, an industrial town like Milton.
No its true to form ... ( 3 weeks ago by frederickbabyyeah)
No its true to form during the inustrial revolution the rich where raised to feel above the working class, they are not being shown as bastards just ignorant and not all the working class in this are shown as angels are they, Margerette is neither rich nor poor she is middle class; its highlighting the state of classes in britain during the industrial revolution but most of thats just the backdrop for a love story; all the wars between master and worker is just the hurdles between the characters
That might be nice ... ( 3 weeks ago by Kybeline)
That might be nice for might be IRA-Members or other leftists. I am a normal person and I had more than enough of this stuff in my childhood in middle Europe. This stuff paths for young romantic girls the way to bolshevism
Quite an honest ... ( 1 week ago by lestanley1979)
Quite an honest assessment - I understand the reaction. The Zola books were imo doctored when published in the Soviet bloc (I have read Germinal in both English and Polish) and novels were much more equivocal. But I get what you mean - there are a lot fewer of these films made here now, a lot more silliness like Cranford, and this is already a kind of period piece of its own. Since 2007 things are on the whole lighter but perhaps less meaty...I don't know which type I prefer either.
