This is a beautiful and delicate piece of music performed by the internationally accaimed pipa soloist Liu Fang(劉芳) with the fabulous percussionist Ziya Tabassian. Here is what comes from her official website: http://www.philmultic.com/liufang/video/ :
"The night of bonfire festival" composed by Wu Junsheng in the 1980s for pipa solo. This piece is performed by Liu Fang (pipa 琵琶) and Ziya Tabassian (framed drum 手鼓), recorded live during the concert on March 27, 2002(**).

Yes, I agree. I have "The Rough Guide To The Music Of China" (World Music Network, 2003. This piece interpreted by Liu Fang with another percussionist is the last track. I love her interpretation. It is beautiful, romantic and very touching.

That's gotta be difficult to play. There's no way to pinch the neck, so you have to fret strings by pushing one way!!! Beautiful music.

It's developed from lute. if you look at early pipa, it's look playing style is very similar to lute. However, both instruments have changed quite a lot since then, and now they are completely different.
