Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron - An American In Paris

Video Description:
Only two pictures have ever been described by critical concensus as "the perfect film"; Citizen Kane and An American in Paris. This was Kelly's magnum opus. His choreography was of such a standard that the Academy of Motion Picture Sciences created a special Oscar that year in recognition of his achievement. Though Singin' in the Rain is the film everyone knows, this is the film they should all watch. This is the routine everyone hould watch.
Here is his duet with the stunning Leslie Caron, and if there is a more charged duet anywhere in dance on film I have yet to see it. All those fans of crappy celebrity ballroom comps should take note. This is how it's done

Thanks for posting this video and also your comments which I enjoyed till you're disparaging somewhat pretentious remarks regarding the television dance shows - they do there best to entertain, and even a 'crappy' dance show highlights the art and is better than most of what is on television. Sometimes the critism tell us more about the source than the object. We can't all be Gene kelly (or Leslie Caron) - as much as we'd love to)

Yes it does, doesn't it? Which is exactly why I said what I did and stand by it. to hear some of the sad and pathetic gushing like schoolgirls at their forst rock concert and behaving like there isn't a dry seat in the house you'd think some of those routines were the products of divinity rather than the barely average performances they really are, and that some of the "professional" dancers were far more than the holiday camp graduates their work shows them to be.

Those shows are a rehashed idea from the seventies given a little gloss by adding "celebrity" of a decidedly second rate nature, and tries to turn some of the pros into personalities when clearly they have none. What's more they are becoming increasingly relient in the suggestion of lascivious behaviour between the candidates instead of the quality of the performances, and that lends weight to their true worth.

The last show had a pairing so poor it was the first time I had ever seen anything approximating a horse and a cow together on a dancefloor, but they kept on getting voted up at the expense of far better couples. Not that there was any hint of a fix at all. Oh no!
We may not all have the ability to BE Gene Kelly, but those who claim to be in the business of doing this should at least ASPIRE to something and they are all far too busy basking the their own magnificence to try.

This is the hottest thing I have ever seen in film or TV, and no one is taking their clothes off. Notice how Gene is holding her with one arm for like 15 seconds, so he was more than just strong legs. I wonder how many woman have pictured themselves in this scene? Happy 96th, Mr. Kelly!

I love An Americn in Paris, but I disagree that it is better than Singing in the Rain. Singing in the Rain I could watch the whole thing through over and over, with An American in Paris, I only watch it for this long 17 min. ballet finale.

I would also like to say that Leslie ripped it in American in Paris.All the hard work Gene put her through paid off in a big way. Gene was quoted to have said that he fought for her being that she was an unknown especially in the States and a very young lady compared to his more mature age.Gene also actually wanted a Parisian actress for the part.

I know I've tried to picture myself with Gene, but not necessarily in this particular scene (I couldn't pull it off and still look good!) There would have been many other occasions, though, when I would have just about died to be with him!
