I remember about a year before Katrina there was an episode on Discovery about oil prices. It was a "what if" What if a hurricane came up past Cuba and hit Louisiana. Because some large % of imported oil is refined there. I just thought it was interesting that the exact thing that they talked about happened a year later.

Well it was more like the French decided to build a city at a choke-point of a major river which anyone at the time could see that it would most likely be important if anyone were to settle the interior of the new world, which they did. Just sayin...

Lol. Thats it? Man what ever happened to quality flaming? I guess it must be dead. FWIW, I really don't view it as a problem. We as a race have always carved out a place to live wherever we chose to, be it a river bend/delta, mountain, or desert. It is why engineering exists in the first place really (of course we will tell you that the world revolves around us so you may want someone else's opinion on that!) Being an average of about a meter or so under sea-level is not a big thing.

I am shocked to see that the state of La. is voting for the same people who let them down after hurricane katrina and ignored them since then. Although I don't live in the state, I have advocated for, supported,voluneered, and contributed to the rebuilding of new orleans. If the people there cannot even vote in their own behalf , then maybe you deserve what you get...which with the republican party is nothing. I can't support people who don't take care of their own best interests.

ALL PEOPLE were affected by Katrina, rich, poor, white, black, middle class working people. It is a disgrace for our country and still the city is in really bad shape, I visit often but moved my mother out of the city where she was born 98 years ago. I am appalled each time I return to see what has happened to my city. REBUILD NEW ORLEANS, THE LEVEE SYSTEM, BARRIER ISLANDS, WETLANDS, SAVE THE COASTAL AREAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3. Somehow you attribute the economical advantages of New Orleans to it being safe??! How does it equate that just because economically speaking it's in a great place, that therefore it's environmentally in a great place? You are going to be experiencing this for a long time, just like places like Fiji will always have Monsoon problems, like it or not if 4mths out of the year it's great for tourism.
