well the BBC released a show called 20th Century" with James May. its pretty good, but has a more "personal influence, emphasis added mine" sort of feel to it than this one.

Well, it's kind of supposed to be Eurocentric, since it's about the development of Western culture and Western way of thought.

They should've given the Chinese and others credit for inventing just about ALL the things they had mentioned in this part.
Other people did ... ( 5 months ago by Pyrochimp)
Other people did have most of these things before Western society, but the series isn't about the inventions themselves or who invented them, it's about how those discoveries affect and create Western society. For example, when the Order of Santiago invaded southern Andalusia to drive the Moors away, they discovered lots of new things the Arabs already knew. It's mentioned, but who knew what first isn't that relevant; what matters is how the West took and used it.

No, I'm not a research scientist that wants credit for his work, I'm a guy watching a series about the development of Western society that isn't very concerned if James Burke doesn't include "In 234 A.D., [Chinese guy] discovered [something], and then 1400 years later some European discovered [something] again" before every single development, discovery, or invention in a 10-hour series.
I'm tired of internet arguing by the way, you win by default.

When this show appeared in the late 80's, I thought it to be the best such work (on thinking) that I had seen. I still think it is a seminal philosophic work. Nice to see it again. David
The 'chinese ... ( 5 months ago by Truthzilla)
The 'chinese invented it first' thing is often overblown. The issue isn't whether the Chinese invented 'printing' first, it's that they never made it past block printing while in the west, we moved to changeable type. And yeh, they had a navy that went all over Asia and India and whatnot, but they did it for a while and stopped, while the west looked at it as a long term investment. Doing something with it is what's important.
Or not. As ... ( 5 months ago by JamesBurkeFan)
Or not. As Pyrochimp keeps pointing out, the series is about *western culture*, not *western science*.
The Chinese did do something with gunpowder; they used it for amusement, parades, worship and so on. Doing something with an idea isn't what he's on about. It's about a particular kind of philosophy where "truth" is a kind of impermanent transient object, defined as our *instantanous* view of the universe; a view with about the half life of helium-5. Quite an astounding POV I think.

Burke mentions ... ( 4 months ago by suzbailey23)
Burke mentions several times in this series and in his others that Eastern cultures (China specifically) made enormous contributions to science. He also repeatedly states that the reason we used that knowledge very differently than the Chinese is due to huge differences in perspective and priority. THAT is exactly what this series is about- that every time we change our perspective, in a sort of esoteric but also very REAL sense we change the universe. (continued in next post)
As for the the idea ... ( 4 months ago by suzbailey23)
As for the the idea that our perspective changes the universe- Gonjamon99 has proven this point EXACTLY. His perspective was that Eastern culture was being discounted, so that's what he saw. In his universe, this series is nothing more than Western propaganda flaptrap. Unfortunately, this perspective got in the way of his ability to see the REAL point of this series- how our perceptions and knowledge changes our ability to further perceive and know. (continued in next post)
Burke addresses the ... ( 4 months ago by suzbailey23)
Burke addresses the difference in Eastern and Western points of view repeatedly, taking care to treat the Eastern view with dignity and respect. The REASON why Western ideas "took over the world" is that our culture is based on improvement and change, while Eastern culture is based on the idea that the physical world is a transient illusion to be eschewed in favor of personal, mental and spiritual enlightenment.
Perhaps gonjamon99 would benefit from giving the bong a rest from time to time.

The idea that ... ( 1 month ago by generalghruff)
The idea that Eastern culture exists at all is just a social construction of Western culture; a need for an other for the purposes of (usually repressive and violent) self-definition. This show is brilliant, but the East/West division is a sham.
