Rep. Monique Davis Advocates Being Atheistic About Atheists

Uploaded by: slightlymentholated
Video Description:
Insulting words from Miss Monique Davis, Illinois State Representative.
Such a lovely display of tolerance.
And yes, I know, the date is wrong. I don't feel like re-rendering it, and the exact date is unimportant -- the fact that someone can be an elected official while displaying this type of bigotry is the main point.

Hopefully this woman's ignorance will result in some sort of censure against her.

i don't understand the logic of your title for this video. How is not believing in a god, or as you would have it, "being atheistic", correlated to the hateful righteous indignation of this woman? In other words, do you think that being an atheist necessarily implies being hateful?
I'd be glad to ... ( 7 months ago by slightlymentholated)
I'd be glad to explain.
Ms. Davis says, "I don't think children should even know your philosophy exists." There is some irony to be found in wanting to pretend that atheists (those who think god doesn't exist) don't exist!
I know that I've taken some liberty with the word "atheistic" (since it strictly means "no god") but the word "a-atheistical" looks really odd.
That clear things up?
Ms. Davis has ... ( 7 months ago by slightlymentholated)
Ms. Davis has finally issued an apology. Basically she says she was having a bad day and took some of her aggression out on Mr. Sherman.
She accidentally slipped and admitted what she believes: atheists have no right to participate in our society. She's still an idiot!

Yes, thank you very much. It is a clever title. But however witty the title is, do you see how it's open to misinterpretation? For instance, one may take for granted that the purpose of a title is to reflect the primary content of its object. One may see the primary content of this particular video as being the intense hatred displayed by Rep. Moinique Davis.
Therefore when one ... ( 7 months ago by repetitionriot)
Therefore when one reads, "Monique Davis 'Being Atheistic'", it seems logical to assume that the author is using the term "atheistic" for the concept of hatefulness, thereby suggesting that being hateful is a universal characteristic of atheists. I know now that this wasn't the intended interpretation, but would also argue that it is probably a very common one.
I understand the ... ( 7 months ago by slightlymentholated)
I understand the point you're getting at, but I don't as many people equate the term "atheist" with any sort of hateful nature as you may think. And if anyone does, they will surely see these comments and that should clear it up!
Actually, Theism is ... ( 7 months ago by mrobertb)
Actually, Theism is a danger to the state as demonstrated by the Representative's behavior. She isn't even willing to allow an Atheist to object to his tax dollars being spent on the restoration of a church, hardly the sort of representative government our Constitution created! Monique Davis needs to sit down and shut up!

I'm an agnostic personally, but I don't think it's right for ANYBODY to crap on another's viewpoint when it comes to their spiritual or their religious beliefs. I may not believe what you do but that gives you no right to tell me or anybody else how to believe. I've met Ms. Davis before and she's FAR from "the worst person in the world". While I have my viewpoints on Illinois Democrats (not all of them are positive) I'm thinking this is about to get into Jeremiah Wright territory..not good!

You have just confirmed the bigotry and ignorance that religion fosters. Fortunately, such attitudes are declining in all civilised societies, though they are persisting more strongly in the US than most other advanced nations.

Sherman is polite and respectful.
Davis is shrill, bigoted, intolerant, rude and insulting.
How could my comments against her be racist? By saying that, it is you who is the racist, to the point of presuming that you even know my ethnic background. Are you aware of who all my grandparents are/were?
Your nonsense is exactly the type of irrational and hateful religious crap that Ms Davis thinks and expresses. No wonder you support her opinions.

who cares about the background of your grand parents-I know whites that hate themselves-this spewing and spreading is dangerous-fed up is right-this gutter hatred of religion by these mindless, stupid atheist should not any longer be tolerated-hate crimes should be filed against any atheist that spew any hatred-it is akin to yelling "fire' in a crowded movie or inciting a riot-europe is seeing rise of conservatives(germany, france) also in canada-because atheism and drugs is destructive
Spewing is ... ( 5 months ago by seathanaich)
Spewing is dangerous, it's a shame you can't see that Davis is doing that.
Atheism is a facet of rational thought. It is an end product that accompanies higher education and safer societies.
Atheism is also a huge positive force, in opposition to harmful, irrational religious superstition.
I agree drug use is destructive. It is nothing to do with atheism. Most people are religious, and drug users (and criminals) are overwhelmingly religious.
Religion is dying in Canada and Europe.

its been dying a slow death constantly, more removed from everyday life
it will, eventually, die completely out

Hi Slightly.
I used to think it was just going to die out too, due to education. It was 9/11 that made me start actively helping that process. Once you acknowledge that religion is evil, you have to fight it, or your silence aids it. That's sounds extreme, but it's not. The fight is on many levels. Letting fundies know different opinions exist. Showing moderate theists that atheists are loving and caring. Supporting the NATO mission in Afghanistan. Lots of work to be done!
Agreed. Many call ... ( 4 months ago by slightlymentholated)
Agreed. Many call atheists who believe in helping eradicate the scourge of religion "immoral" and "hateful", when I believe most so-called "militant atheists" (a term i dislike) would like to destroy as means of helping people rather than hurting them.
The abundant moderate believers are enablers of the problem as well; fostering a culture that allows fundamentalism to thrive by lending some type of credibility to the source text.
Hi Mentholated. I ... ( 4 months ago by seathanaich)
Hi Mentholated. I would add that "moderate" believers also enable the problem because they refuse to address the problems of religion, rightly realising that doing so will cause a long list of problems for them, the most scary being the possibility that they might reject their current beliefs. Cheers.

The only hate in this exchange is Davis's hate of an Atheist. You are an idiot.
