i think i got 30,000 wow im a noob. but what is confusing is when it says enter your name for the high scores, i enter it and next time i turn on my game boy and play, my high score is gone! would you happen to know why?

That would be by design, unfortunately. Gameboy cartridges weren't equipped with a battery in those days (some of the later were, particularly Pokémon®). So, the Gameboy itself having no means whatsoever to memorise any data at all, resetting it via the on/off switch would indeed erase your score. I have Tetris 1.0 and 1.1 (no visual or gameplay difference whatsoever) and both have the same 'issue'

Save RAM is part of the Game Boy's memory map so it's either on the cartridge or not there (and the highscores are therefore stored in another RAM area). If it's on the cartridge, maybe you could hack it so it saves the scores :D
