Of the pianists we can actually listen to, I like different pianists for different composers. Schnabel would get my vote as the most profound Beethoven interpreter, Rubinstein in the Romantic repertoire, Gould in Bach, Michelangeli in Debussy/Ravel. To mention Cziffra, that clattering technician, in the same breath as Rubinstein is sacrilege to me. Horowitz, before his retirement & Carnegie Hall comeback, had a bad rep as a showoff: that's why he retired. Post-comeback he was much better, but...

Absolutely desagree... it is non affected, non mannered, stright pure musical experience... The term "depth" has been and it is obvioulsy used . most of the time - as a cliché...By the way, few pianists have abben able to "hold" the musical structure like Rubinstein, without breaking the line.
