The State Chukchi-Eskimo Group "Ergyron" ("Sunrise" in the Chukchi language) was created in 1968 as a professional dance and song Chukchi-Eskimo group. In 1974 it acquired a status of a state ensemble.
In August 2000, it was recognized as the most precious cultural heritage object of the peoples inhabiting he Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.
Ergyron is the only professional dancing and singing group in the Okrug. It is main keeper of national vocal, choreography and applied arts of not only Chukchi and Eskimo people, but also of other minorities peoples of the Far North-West of Russia: Koryaks and Chuvans, Lamuts and Evens, Aleutians and Evenks. Their traditions are reflected in Ergyron's concert performances such as "Vylgykoramnat Rite", "Whale Celebration", "Awakening", in music concerts and albums of traditional Chukchi-Eskimo songs, as well as in various theater performances. The ensemble is doing its best to preserve and multiply cultural heritage of the Chukotka population in folk plays, vocal and choreographic performances, in national costumes and articles of decorative and applied arts and crafts.
The ensemble's repertoire includes not just folk songs, dances and miniatures such as "Seagull Flying Against Wind", "Gathering Eggs on the Rocks", "Deer Slaughter", "Walrus Hunt", but also a ballet "Raven Legend", an opera "A Girl and the Death", and a musical "Fairytale about Good and Evil", based on Chukchi and Eskimo legends and tales.
The ensemble's repertoire has more than 70 works of national vocal and choreographic art and many works by Russian authors.
Ergyron is associated with the names of many notable artists, musicians, directors, poets and writers of the Chukotka region. Among them are Antonina Kymytval, Galina Tagrina, Grigory Pananto, Jacov Tagjek, Nikolai Mentser, Sergei Zakatyura; Honoured artists of the Russian Federation Nikolai Tatato, Alexander Tevlyalkot, Vassily Kevkei; Honoured workers of art Ekaterina Rultyneut and Georgy Kovtun.
The ensemble is a Lenin Komsomol Prize Laureate. It won awards of the All-Russia Dance and Song Ensembles Festival, of World Youth and Student Festivals, of the "Voice of Asia" International Song Contest, of International Folk Music Festivals in Montere and Montignak (France), and of various folk music festivals of peoples of the North.
Ergyron has been on tours in the USA, Belgium, France, Poland, India, Canada, Southern Korea, Singapore, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, neighboring countries of Russia and other countries of the world.
In November 2003, the ensemble celebrated its 35th anniversary. New concert programs was presented to audience, first in Anadyr and then in other parts of the region.
