spot on; he has not spent 30 years "defying convention" and "keeping it real by playing small clubs", he has spent 30 years living out his childish and semi-developed personality through the medium of "music". the worship of Mark E Smith as a kind of rock hero (or "anti-hero" if you want to resort to utterly meaningless journalistic cliche) is mystifying and rather sad.
