And yet... the Krauts still lost. The 109 & 190 were magnificent planes... German engineering was/is superb... however, their engines have never packed the punch that the brits/yanks have had. Had fritz needed a superb naval plane, perhaps they could have come up with something close to the Corsair... but I doubt it.

I'm fairly certain that this warbird had the largest propeller all of all the WW2 small fighters. As a kid I used to love watching the TV series called BAA BAA Black Sheep about Pappy Boyingtons' Corsair Squadron starring Robert Blake. Wish that was still on TV. Love this clip, thanks.
The Corsair in the ... ( 1 year ago by HDcamman)
The Corsair in the video is "Marine's Dream" a Goodyear built FG-1D. Goodyear and Brewster were contracted to build Corsairs to keep up with the demand. Vought did modify some F4Us with R-4360 engines toward the end of the war because of demand from the Navy for a 500 mph fighter. 12 to 15 were configured with the 4360 before the war ended but none saw service. The F4U used the 3-bladed prop til later models of the F4U-4 started using the 4-bladed prop.

The Japanese dubbed it "Whistling Death" because of the whispering sound it made in the air because of the turbocharger. Cool plane and nice video!

The whistling came ... ( 1 year ago by cgates1)
The whistling came from the openings for the oil coolers at the wing root (I note that the Wikipedia entry on this point is incorrect). And, technically, it had a (mechanically-driven) supercharger, not a turbo-supercharger (which is what is commonly referred to as a turbo or turbo charger).

Thats true, and if im not mistaken thats the reason for the unusual wing shape as well, to keep the gear as short as possible while keeping the prop off the deck lol.

The Corsair served in some air forces until the 1960s, following the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in U.S. history (1942--1952).During World War II, it was the fighter the Japanese feared the most. The U.S. Navy counted an 11:1 kill ratio for every F4U shot down.

And the reason why it has a gull wing. Notice how the landing gear is at the V- to allow enough ground clearance for that massive prop.

Yep - and it could even be a deadly weapon. Lt. Klingman of VMF-312 Checkerboards was pursuing a Kawasaki Ki-45 over Okinawa at very high altitude when his guns jammed. He sliced off the enemy plane's tail with his propellor blades and, despite losing a big chunk off each blade, managed to return home safely. He got the Navy Cross for that amazing achievement.
