Bill Walton isn't a ... ( 2 weeks ago by JPfromFlint)
Bill Walton isn't a top 50 NBA player. He's not even in the top 75. 100 perhaps but not top 50.
Kareem considered ... ( 2 weeks ago by jp3813)
Kareem considered him his greatest threat, but Walton was always sidelined by injuries.
Sounds like Kareem ... ( 1 week ago by ddenuci)
Sounds like Kareem is just trying to make a fellow Bruin feel good. Truth is, Walton only had four good years all at the beginning of his career. The first 2, the Blazers didn't even make the playoffs. The 3rd year was the magical year, which included sweeping the Lakers in the playoffs. In the 4th year, the Sonics eliminated Bill's Blazer in the first round! Nah, if Kareem was being honest, he would have said Wilt, Thurmond, Parish, and others before he got to Walton

Dispite being a huge basketball fan myself, I don't recognise some of the names! Shows how much I know compared to a lot of people, time to do some research!

Right, Kareem is making somebody feel good by disrespecting all the other centers he went up against except Walton.
jp: I can ... ( 1 week ago by ddenuci)
jp: I can understand Walton saying that Jabbar was his greatest threat. In fact, I believe Walton has said that he considers Jabbar to be the best player he ever played against or with (including Larry and magic). But exactly when did Jabbar say he considers Walton his greatest "Threat" ? Is it in Jabbar's book? If not, can you provide a link to an article? I would like to read the entire artcle to understand the context. Because, on the surface, the statement makes no sense.
Walton's career: ... ( 1 week ago by ddenuci)
Walton's career: Blazers (75 &76) do not make playoffs. Blazers (77)defeat Lakers in West, and win championship. Blazers (78) lose to Sonics in first round. In 79, Walton dnp. Clippers (80), Walton plays 14 games and Clippers do not make playoffs. In 81 and 82, Walton sits out. Clippers (83,84,& 85), Clippers fail to make playoffs. In 86, Walton averages 7.6ppg and Celtics defeat Houston for championship. Finally in '87, Bill plays in 10 gms for Celtics as they lose to Lakers in finals.
So there you have ... ( 1 week ago by ddenuci)
So there you have it. I only see maybe two years (77 &78) where Kareem could have seriously considered Walton a "threat". Here's a guy who in his career made the playoffs only in 4 years.
I couldn't find the ... ( 1 week ago by jp3813)
I couldn't find the video anymore, maybe it got deleted. But here's another video of Kareem praising Walton starting at 1:05: watch?v=hrExF77To8I
Note that Kareem considers the fact that Walton has been held back by injuries. The fact that he could win a championship when healthy says a lot for his talent. He famously outplayed Kareem during the Blazers' sweep of the Lakers in the postseason during that same year.
"I thought when he ... ( 1 week ago by ddenuci)
"I thought when he was healthy, he was one of the great players to play the game". Ok, I guess I can agree with Kareem on that re. Walton. Certainly when he was healthy in college, he was one of the best ever to play the game. My main point in all this is just to show that Walton does not deserve to be in the top 50 of all time NBA players.
JPfromFlint: Agree ... ( 1 week ago by ddenuci)
JPfromFlint: Agree. His CAREER point total is only slightly more than Wilt scored in the 1961-62 season. Three guys to consider as replacements as of 1997: Lanier, Bellamy, Gilmore. Now, 11 years later, Alonzo, Yao, and Stoudamire. Dwight Howard in a few more years if he keeps it up.
Commenting on ... ( 1 week ago by ddenuci)
Commenting on Walton got me to thinking about players who might be in the discussion for Top 50 had their careers not been cut short. The first one to come to mind is certainly not a household name, Maurice Stokes who played in the late '50s. He averaged 16 points and 17 boards in his 3 year career. If you don't know his story, read about him. Others (though not quite Top 50 caliber) include: Petrovic, Petrie and Brad Daugherty.
Kareem didn't play ... ( 1 week ago by jp3813)
Kareem didn't play against Walton in college. He played against him in the NBA, and as I already pointed out, he even outplayed Kareem in the Lakers sweep. Kareem obviously recognizes Walton as one of the greatest NBA players since the interview was about the 50 greatest players.
In the Blazer sweep ... ( 1 week ago by ddenuci)
In the Blazer sweep of the Lakers, Jabbar outscored Walton 121-77, outrebounded him 64-59, blocked more shots 15-9, and shot a higher pct 61%-50%. The main reason the Lakers lost was because they were missing their power forward Kermit Washington, and had no answer for Lucas. Kareem scored 40 points in Game 2! So it wasn't Kareem who was outplayed by Walton; it was the Lakers who were outplayed by the Blazers.
I guess you're ... ( 1 week ago by jp3813)
I guess you're right about that series. But let's not forget that the Blazers were the underdogs in the playoffs. Winning only 49 games in the season, the predicted champions were either the Lakers or the Sixers. Led by an uninjured Walton, the Blazers destroyed both teams.
jp: They ... ( 1 week ago by ddenuci)
jp: They technically were the underdog, but in that particular year there was no really dominant team. The Lakers finished with 53 wins, but as I mentioned they had injuries going into the playoffs (Kermit Washington, and Lucious Allen) and the 76ers finished with 50 win. The Trailblazers were only one win behind with 49. Portland also had to knock off the Denver Nuggets in the semifinals, but the Western Conf division leaders also only had 50 wins.
The Blazers proved ... ( 1 week ago by jp3813)
The Blazers proved dominant in the playoffs b/c of Walton.
The previous season ... ( 1 week ago by ddenuci)
The previous season (76), the Blazers were led by Wicks and Petrie. But by '77, Wicks had been sent to Boston and Petrie retired. It's impressive that the '77 Blazers were able to work in former ABA stars Twardzik and Lucas so quickly. That '77 team had alot of youth (Lucas/Walton both 24, and Gross/Hollins both 23). THey could have had a mini-dynasty. At the very least, it would have been great to watch a healthy Walton team with Lucas to take on Webster/Sikma in the '78 playoffs.
