GENESIS - Cinema Show live (overhead version) drums Jouxplan

Uploaded by: jouxplan
Video Description:
Right! Here is a much better version of my attempt at covering this beautiful Genesis live track. I look a bit more serious than last week, so it is not as amusing perhaps, but it is definately closer to the original! Maybe drummers DO have to look stern and serious and show no emotion, to play these difficult tracks :-)
I love Bill Bruford's opening drumming on this. It is so crisp and effortless, and very deceptive in terms of trying to copy. Even the pause before the little fill at 1'49 throws me every time - I always want to go into it earlier! The bit he plays around 2'16, with the ride bell 'ands' is also deceptive - very easy to mess up!
Obviously, the real fun starts at 2'47. Here we have really difficult interplay between the open hi hat and the bass drum and snare, all in 7/4 time. Maybe this is a weakness for me, but I find that opening and closing my hi hat quickly enough in this part really hard. It takes a lot of co-ordination and balance. And once the double hits start on the bass, it becomes a real 'mare!
I have pretty much got all the fills right in the section from 2'47 to 3'28, although one of them comes one bar too late. Pants. They are beautiful fills by Bill (or Phil?? - which one is playing this bit??!!)
I ad lib a bit during the quiet section at 3'50 - hope this is ok. The gorgeous snare rolls that come out of this section at 4'06 are my favourite bit of drumming in the whole track - they sound incredible (Phil / Bill, not me).
The hi-hat inversion thing that goes on at 4'43 is awesome. I love how they do this, and provided you can get into it at the right moment, it sounds incredible when you manage to copy it. Especially once you get that extra bass drum hit in, that is introduced several bars in.
I messed up at 5'04, managing to play a fill instead of a complex bass drum part. Pants. Er, and I fully admit that I totally chickened out of playing the hellish snare / bass interplay thing at around 6'35. I keep getting this wrong in practice, and was not going to mess up this take by getting it wrong again! You can't have everything! Suffice to say that Bill / Phil do something incredible at this point, and I ain't up to copying it!!
The closing bit at around 6'50 just cannot sound right when there is only me on my own - this really needs two drummers!
Anyway, I am much happier with this version, and hope you enjoy it!
I think I will do Abacab live next - I should be able to grin and relax a bit more in that one! I hate all this serious face stuff!
:-)

Dude, you are awesome. You didn't hit every single little part, but you did a damn good job. The Cinema Show is a hard piece. It's also really cool to see people drum to Phil Collins and Genesis material that isn't total crap.

Hey, thank you!
I think I have said this before, but I have to admit that I am immensely proud of this video. Probably the best Genesis cover I have put on YouTube. Well worth the hours I put in trying to get all the detail right!

near perfect. it seems like you hit your left hi-hat a beat too early at 6:55. it sounded just off to me, and it looked like you noticed it too. but still a million times better than i'll ever be. keep up the good work.

Well spotted! Yes, there is a little error at that point: I think I had a bit of an out of body experience, and was thinking about the cat or my mortgage or the fact that this take was going pretty well so I better not mess up now, and hey presto, I damn near came out of that fill in the wrong place! Yes, I did notice it at the time, as you have clearly spotted from my face!
Cheers!

how come no one covers the album version and segue to aisle of plenty? is it because the live versions are more complex than the album?
Not sure, to be ... ( 4 months ago by jouxplan)
Not sure, to be honest. For my part, the reasons are (a) I actually prefer the live versions, more often than not (Duke is an exception - the studio version is easily the best version IMHO) (b) the studio versions are often more intricate and delicate on drums and harder to cover (c) a live cover can by defintion be less accurate because small deviations from the actual drum part(s) will be less noticeable!!!
Live versions ARE complex, but in a different way. They are not MORE complex IMHO.

whenever i drun or air drum, i prefer live "cinema show". the studio version is spectacular, and more of a listening song. The segue into "aisle of plenty" is rarely rivaled. but with CS live recordings 1975+, ther was a great power/feeling shift from all instruments in unicen, to more of a drum-specific song. I love CS from seconds out because it makes me really work and sweat to get all the parts down. CS from SEBP is something almost too pervfect to touch.
yeahh thats ... ( 3 months ago by ericjohnsen666)
yeahh thats agreeable, i mean i totally understand why people choose the live versions because like you said, theyre spectacular to listen to and its such an acceptable piece of music to try and drum along to. i just think its rare to see someone on youtube play the album version of the cinema show, though ive seen "miniphil" do it and this guy with an electric drumset in his apartment do it. but oh well, i just enjoy watching people try and imitate this wonderful piece of music =]
