Probably my favorite Ricky Nelson song, it's either this one or 'Stood Up'! Ricky actually wanted to do more rock 'n' roll like this, but his father wanted him to sing ballad stuff, so that's what he ultimately ended up doing more of.

As it has already been said. One of (if not the) very best rockabilly songs ever. Dig James Burton!

Hello SirBasildeBrush!
About JB's guitar sound: I have heard that he used banjo strings on this one in order to be able to bend them the way he wanted. For more details, see his website.

Hi RockinM - that I didn't know! Must be why I don't sound like that. I heard guitar surf king Dick Dale used to regularly break the heaviest-gauge strings available and ground his picks down to nothing several times in the same song.

You could also ask how Luther Perkins made his guitar sound like that. He always said their looking for it but I've found it.

JB (King of the Telecaster) was probably 18 or 19 in this program. This was obviously lip-sync'd, so I wonder if he really used the Gretsch he's seen here with on the actual recording. It really sounds more like a Tele, which he was using by this time.
Maybe the director thought that the Gretsch looked sexier on camera. JB, if you're out there, whad'ya say?

I always liked this ... ( 1 month ago by KapnKoolio)
I always liked this record a lot. I say this *record* because in terms of production it is way way ahead of most of the other rock and roll singles being made at this time. The sound isn't the greatest on this vid, but the way the echo-soaked lead guitar is punched in here and there and throughout the final chorus is really good craftmanship. The way the piano is used too -- great. Ozzie Nelson always made sure his boy had the best in terms of sidemen, record producers, etc., and it shows.
So many other ... ( 1 month ago by KapnKoolio)
So many other records of the era were just rushed out with little concern for production values -- often "produced" by people who were basically incompetent. This was never the case with Ricky Nelson. And I mean him no direspect either -- he had loads of talent.

Great song. ... ( 5 days ago by Kirke182)
Great song. Written by the great Johnny Burnette. I think he wrote it specifically for Ricky to do. Great guitar work by James Burton. Did you know he used a banjo string for his small E-string? Ricky was a handsome devil to be sure but he didn't need his looks to get by. He was a great talent and my first big rocknroll hero. Wish he was still here.
