I've never heard Baila music characterized as calypso before... but I guess it fits, being that it's our version of island music.

This is a great calypso song. A clip of the beautiful song for autism 'Open Every Door' sung by Nimal Mendis(who wrote Master Sir) with a cover version by Rozagy, a British musician who has Asperger's Syndrome is on the soundtrack of a youtube film called 'Autism Action.' Please see the film on You Tube. Rozagy is raising funds for Professor Simon Baron Cohen's Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University with the song 'Open Every Door' composed by Nimal Mendis.

This songs like a fusion of genres that is heard in Trinidad called Chuntney-Soca-Parang.
Chutney from the Indo-Trinidadian tradition.
Parang (or Paranda) from the Hispanic traditional Christmas music sung in Trinidad.
Soca...a dance or 'pop' derivitative of Calypso...

By the way....the 'oil drum' (Steel Pan) 'type' calypso of old is very stereotypical of the what the metropolitan world thinks of as Calypso music. In Trinidad, steel pan still has a deep connection with calypso, but the music has evolved far past the "Day-O...Banana Boat Song" of Harry Belafonte (not to criticize that..because it was GREAT). The music that is portrayed on movies that feature Caribbean Resorts is not what contemporary West Indians think off when we think of Calypso.

Some people call the band that plays this music 'calypos bands' so the term Calypso was attached. If you go to any beach resort in Sri Lanka you will in a band playing this music. The influence is Portuguese and african slaves who were brought to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese. These slaves were called kaffrinha, and their dance music was called baila. It is commonly known in Lanka as kapirinya or Lankan baila.

I have to agree with Island Cricket. Calypso music is from the Caribbean islands. Jamaica farewell, Island in the Sun, Matilda, Banana Boat Song etc are great Calypsos. The tradition of waring Straw hats & Batik Sarongs was first introduced to the Sri Lankan music scene by La Ceylonians leader Noel Ranasinha. Then somebody had a bright idea to call this style "Calypso" which is utterly wrong...!!!!!!!!
Calypso is a different style of music. Group songs (Kandayam Geetha) are not Calypsos.
