Danny Gatton - Harlem Nocturne

Uploaded by: anarchy2465
Video Description:
Truly, a guitar player's finest. EDIT: It looks like the sound is off a bit, this was unintended. The original video is fine. You can still here his amazing guitar playing, regardless.

The first time I saw Danny perform was In Wash.dc under the Crazy Horse.A smoky little jazz club. Perfect venue to see Danny for the first time. I was with Jay Montrose and Donny Moose. Both techs for Danny and Timm Biery. We all miss Danny terribly. Danny left a big hole in our lives.
The Harlem Nocturne ... ( 6 months ago by noahawk07)
The Harlem Nocturne thing is very confusing and controversial. I was at a show to hear the R&B legend Johnny Otis and he claimed unequivocally that he wrote Harlem Nocturne. Although I see no evidence to support that.

When I saw Danny perform the first time at Beneath it All. The music was from the Redneck Jazz album. What really blew me away was, as much as you watched his hands you couldn't for the life of you figure out How The Hell Did He DO That?

Earle Hagen wrote "Harlem Nocturne." (Same guy who wrote the music for the Andy Griffith Show theme.) Hagen also wrote the music for "I Spy" and several other 60s TV series.
First hears of ... ( 5 months ago by michaelmto)
First hears of Danny from a friend with the Magic Reign in '70/'71. I had a Fender bass which needed some work and he said he knew a guy who reworked guitars and he swore was as good as Hendrix. My bass was redone by Danny before I had a chance to see him play at The Keg as Liz Meyer's axe man. He did Harlem Noctourne that night and nearly every time I saw him after that. Emmylou Harris sat beside me FWIW.

He was quite the technician with the hardware.
The guitars he did for Les Paul himself were just unbelievable
I really miss the guy.

Only two songs ever made me cry. One: Nauges (Django); the other, Harlem Nocturne by Danny.
Beatiful. These stuff is what makes life worthy!!

LordReinhardt Thats a really nice comment. A beautiful song should be more important than technical amazement. Maybe its a guy thing where we naturally get caught up with fancy playing. But the true essence is the music; I wish I could remember that more often. mastercollector

He was a very, very decent guy. An old girlfriend ran about 200 feet of tape off his reel to reel onto the floor and he did not get pissed.
It broke me up when he died.He must have been in terrible pain.
His legacy should include that he treated people well and was a humble man.

Living near D.C., like he did, I am dissapointed to be 13 years old. Both of my parents, and both of my guitar teachers have seen him, but it's too late for me. He is still a favorite guitarist of mine nonetheless, and I wish he would get a similar level of fame as less talented guitarists such as..ugh.. Zakk Wylde.

michaelmto, I've been trying to find live material from 1970-1972 of Gatton during the Liz Meyer ara. I've heard stuff from 65-94 but want to find material from 70-72, and the early 60's era with the Offbeats and Danny with Dick Heintze. Formally mastercollector now the new name is Gattonmaster.

you keep listening to this cat and keep playing from age 13 on and you'll be the next Gatton. Right around early teens is when your brain is still developing, so it's more important that you practice non stop right now than at any other time during your life.

Gatton fans I've heard Danny live in 68, a 69 unnacompanied Orangle Blossom Special, and a 73 live show but anyone with live shows from 1969-1973 with Gatton please contact me. This era is not talked about alot and it would be intersting to hear his guitar from that period of time.

Man, I'm crazy about that sound, ESPECIALLY the parts that sound a bit off. That discord... the guitar almost seems to sag off key then bam, right back on again. So evocative of a dirty, sleazy city night. I mean wow.

I grew up with Danny. We graduated from Oxon Hill High School (1963) in Maryland. Danny used to play at a bar called Billy Jacks a lot. Billy Jacks was owned by Billy Underwood and others who also graduated with us. Danny we love you and R.I.P. We will miss you forever. Matt
