JWST Next Generation Space Telescope

Uploaded by: BrunoTheQuestionable
Video Description:
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, infrared-optimized space telescope, scheduled for launch in 2013. JWST will find the first galaxies that formed in the early Universe, connecting the Big Bang to our own Milky Way Galaxy. JWST will peer through dusty clouds to see stars forming planetary systems, connecting the Milky Way to our own Solar System. JWST's instruments will be designed to work primarily in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, with some capability in the visible range.
JWST will have a large mirror, 6.5 meters (21.3 feet) in diameter and a sunshield the size of a tennis court. Both the mirror and sunshade won't fit onto the rocket fully open, so both will fold up and open only once JWST is in outer space. JWST will reside in an orbit about 1.5 million km (1 million miles) from the Earth.

Using infrared ... ( 1 year ago by BrunoTheQuestionable)
Using infrared light its only possible to see back to the first stars, which were about 150 million years after the big bang. But thats 99% back to the beginning of time !

It will sit at 2nd lagrange point right? Will they use it to detect exoplanets?

Yes, it will be at L2 (as will Herschel).
Its prime purpose is to observe at extreme distances - hence the big mirror and IR instruments (because of the redshift).
It should also be a good planet finder as planets radiate mainly in the IR.

I hear that they are going to launch a second space craft that will work with JWST; Its called the Starshade. Have you heard of it?

Its new to me. It appears to be an aid to imaging exoplanets - it is positioned in the line of sight and blocks the light from the star. I'm rather dubious.

If only the cash spent on religion had been spent on science, we'd have launched this thing 50 years ago!

How can you say "Wrong"? lol.
In technological and scientific terms, do you not agree that we would certainly be far, far ahead of where we are currently if monies had been invested in science rather than religion?
It seems difficult to deny!
Just because you ... ( 6 months ago by NoCompromise83)
Just because you have the money doesn't mean there will be any break through. And giving money to "religion" which religion btw? Giving money to Christian organizations which feed and give medical aide and education to people in other countries is certainly more worth than any technological breakthroughs. This has nothing to do with religion. You only bring it up because you have a deep seeded hatred in your heart toward any thing of GOD.
I refer to giving ... ( 6 months ago by saelaird)
I refer to giving money to all religious organisations.
There are many secular organisations who provide aid throughout the world.
Breakthroughs ARE made easier with financial investment in equipment, man-hours etc.
I do not have a deep-seated hatred towards God as I don't believe he exists.

You don't think that churches don't keep a bit of that money? You don't think that some Pastors live like kings? You don't think that the Vatican is COVERED in gold and jewels? You don't think they all build multi-million dollar chuches and monuments?
However religion is nothing compared to the money spent on the military-industrial complex. Over 1 TRILLION dollars annually is spent on arms. About half from the USA. Not to mention the people who die because of it.
