Thanks for the tips! I have to disagree with using an aperture of 2.8 or thereabouts; lights in a dark surrounding blur easily. With an aperture of 2.8 the depth of field (DOF) is verly limited, and may cause a lot of blurry lights.
If you're going to use a tripod anyway, you might as well use an aperture of 13 or more to get as much as possible into your DOF. This increases the exposure, but with mostly static objects this doesn't really matter.

Hi Mark, you're absolutely right about the depth of field, although if most of the subject is distant, you wouldn't need to go as far as f13. Something like f5.6 or f8 would be sufficient. The reason I suggested an open aperture though was that the exposure in some situations may otherwise go beyond 30 seconds and require Bulb which was beyond the scope of this tutorial. For example my 5 second exposure at approx f4 would need to be 10 seconds at f5.6, 20 at f8, 40 at f11 and 80 seconds at f16.
