He jokes that he's America's worst nightmare and plans to nationalise Bolivia's oil industry and overturn the old social order. As yet another South American country 'goes left', we profile Bolivia's new President.
As a former union leader, Evo Morales is more accustomed to attacking governments than leading them. But Bolivia's first ever indigenous President has ambitious plans for his country. "Sooner or later there must be a profound transformation", he vows. "I want a new economic model." Morales' first objective is to seize back control of the country's national assets, including its enormous natural gas reserves. "Oligarchies won't just give up. They want to continue sucking the Bolivian people's blood." A series of forced privatisations imposed by the World Bank and IMF left Bolivia the poorest country in Latin America. Now, Morales has pledged to renegotiate existing oil contracts. Actions like this -- and his close friendship with Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro -- have sent shivers down Washington's spine. But any heavy-handed action from the White House could backfire. As analyst Jim Shultz explains: "America's fear is that it will push Bolivia into the arms of Hugo Chavez."

Vamos Evo!!! Luche por los derechos de su pueblo. Desde Argentina hay gran respeto por los bolivianos. Con una cultura tan rica y fastastica. Su propia lengua y ropas tradicionales. Cuando uno esta orgulloso de lo que es, no importa lo que los otros piensan y uno aprende a respetar a los demas.

The international community has been enamored by the tale of Evo Morales, the "poor indigenous president" who fights for equity for the poor and oppressed indigenous people, an image he has been able to sell well by means of his propaganda machine. In fact his government is an authoritarian one and one that only cares about democracy in speech but not fact. A government that doesn't respect law and imposes his will by mobilizing payed militias of armed peasants in an attempt to seize all powers.

even che guevera was somewhat brutal. does the means justify the end? nobody will ever know enough to be qualified to judge that. bottom line is which would you rather have? bush and his american baby torturing empire, or one of the only mavericks brave enough to reject the empire and stand on their own at great peril.. morales, violent as he may be is in fact nationalizing his oil (like saddam) and will probably die for it. violence aside, it is still the best thing he could do for his country.

I agree, nationalizing the oil industry was the best thing Morales' government has done so far and it was a popular demand ratified by vote in a referendum held in 2004, prior to Morales election in 2005. Still, the so called "nationalization" was just a "statization" of assests already owned by the bolivian people and a re-negotiation of contracts in order to raise taxes. The "nationalization" part was force-buying about 2% of the assets owned by foreing companies in the nationalized companies.

In the end, Evo is doing more harm than good, isolating Bolivia from the international community, scaring away investment, shutting off access to international markets, trying to impose an illegal and flawed contitution that benefits only small minorities of so called "natives" and in which not everyone is equal to the law, and mostly promoting hatred against foreigners and "white" people.
