Almost all carpet cleaners do this. Get a quote BEFORE the work starts. According to Cleanfax Magazine 2007, the average price is 34 cents a square foot.

I do carpet cleaning.
I do not use coupons, and if someone calls I tell them I charge 20 cents a square foot and that averagerages to $60 a room. Then I actually charge $15 cents.
This does two things, I don't have to worry about people not paying, because it is always lower than what they were expecting.
Second, it creates word of mouth advertising I imagine they say "they said it would cost $300, but the stupid tech only charged two hundred"

But while it is easy to blame the cleaners for this problem, consumers are to blame too. They go for the lowest price, without consideration of the quality or the markups. to good to be true?
When I give an estimate I tell them the price that is above average, but on arrival if it is average, I will lower the price.
However this strategy cost me a lot of business in the short term. It took me a long time to get a customer base. But now I don't have to advertise at all and I am doing well.

I come after people like you. And my solution come up black. for every 600 sqr feet you should take one hour. So for 1500 sqr feet at your rates you would be making gross of 26 and netting 15 and after taxes 10. Why don't you go work at mcdonalds. It is easier.

Bait and switch artists are the scourge of the industry. Problem is, many IICRC certified firms are not adhering to standards either and have bad apples working for them. I have seen many bait and switch ads proudly displaying the IIRC logo. Best thing to do is get a written quote, ask for a full money back guarantee and inquire what is included in the "standard" service and what consitutes extra charges. IICRC doesnt babysit the industry.

You have to understand.. We carpet cleaners do have A basic Minimum.
With a 14$ Per room coupon even with 2 rooms.. I still have to charge 60$
we go no less.

I don't understand how these techs get over 100$.. We charge 99$ for 3 rooms. No hidden fee's. We advertise that. we have no special deals though.
o.O You can't clean at 9$ a room.. you lose about 12$ worth of chemicals 15$ per room worth of time, and even 10$ worth of gas.
So I don't see how they even advertise this.

Stanley, I'm right there with you. We do 3 rooms, $99, truck mount steam, pre-vac, pre condition, prespot, move furniture, fiber rinse, groom and we'll even feed the dog if the homeowner is not home! (the last one is a joke.. haha, but we would!). Customers gladly pay and I get lots of referrals for it!
And what I find is that 9 out of 10 customer paying $99 for 3 rooms will either buy scotchguard, carpet repair, odor removal or other cleaning services (like tile or upholstery).

What a shame! They are the companys that put a bad rep on carpet cleaning companys. I own a carpet cleaning company, myself, it is just embaresing to see such garbage.
