come to NZ then. we have far more lenient immigration rules than Australia. Stay here for 5 years, become a NZ citizen then you'll be sweet to enter Aussie :) We accept refuges too.
As for Advance Australia Fair, a far better national anthem than God Defend New Zealand. Had it stuck in my head all day at work, driving work colleagues insane haha

Do you accept Yanks?
I like this a lot more than my anthem. It's just thumbing our noses at the Brits, and the tune is an old British drinking song. SIGH.

Girt means surrounded. When the line in the anthem says "Our home is girt by sea", it means they are surrounded by sea.

If you read the entire thing, the lyrics make it very clear that Australians are still "sons of Britannia" and that they'll guard the land for old England's sake. British pride is still very much alive in the Commonwealth nations, because many Australians (and Canadians, etc.) are English, Irish, Scotch by blood.

The viddy begins with the Third verse; since few people know all 3, the last verse is actually the First so everyone can sing along. The Star Spangled Banner likewise (FYI) has in fact 4 verses, does else anyone know the 2nd thru 4th?
This video actually ... ( 2 weeks ago by minordin)
This video actually starts with the second verse...
Our current national anthem consists of two versus... although most people only know the first... we do learn the second in school! It did have like 4 originally. I proud to say i can sing along to the second :D
They repeated the first verse here though... it isnt offically the 'third verse'... i guess they wanted it to sound grander lol... and to sing along like u said.
She does an amazing job though... i got chills when i watched it live!

I'll take your word for it, as you're a citizen. However I'd based my comment on sheet music (published by Allans Music, NSW, 1932) which was provided to me by your Consul General for the United States. My copy has 3 verses, the second of which I believe was discarded in the referendum adopting your Anthem. I agree, Julie Anthony does a magnificent job here, with the Sydney Symphony. The arrangement I'm working on is for the Melbourne Symphony; hopefully you'll be able to hear it in a year or so

Technically you're correct, but as minordin says we've come to know it as the second verse.
It is occasionally sung at big events, but the large majority don't know it and only really recognise the first verse. Most people have enough trouble remembering the words to the first verse :P
Yes thanks; I'd ... ( 4 days ago by UlfenDaddy)
Yes thanks; I'd discovered a bit more to the history of the anthem lately, then copy the Consul gave me is a bit out of date. But we have the same issue with the American national anthem-- it's 4 verses and I have YET to meet a politician, historian or Political Science student that has actually READ or knows anything of vv 2-4. It's like expecting a prospective citizen to know someting of the Constitution-- we don't require American students to read it!!! Shameful! But Advance is a great anthem
It's a shame this ... ( 4 days ago by UlfenDaddy)
It's a shame this was a "canned" performace; the lead vocals and the orchestra were actually miming (or lip-sync'ing, as the case may be.) In fact, parts of the Orchestral accompaniment were in fact played by Sydney's arch-rival, the MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. Sad-- the Chinese took it to new heights this past Olympics by splicing rehearsal footage of the opening FIREWORKS into the telecast; they "mimed" that part of their opening ceremonies!!!

I heard this almost every night by the Aussie's in the STAN. A good bunch of boys, as are the Kiwi's. When they say I've got your back. They have you back. It was written by a Scotsman ;-). Oh and I know it off by heart now...Heard it enough times ha ha. Beautiful anthem and sung brilliantly.
