Genesis -- Turn It On Again Live (drums by Jouxplan)

Uploaded by: jouxplan
Video Description:
since Duke's Travels / End is not yet ready for posting, I thought I would try and cover this fun track by our friends Phil and Chester, especially since someone on here asked me to do it.
I guess some people might say this is boring, or easy, or not exactly vintage Genesis. I don't know. What I do know is that it is great fun to drum along to, and is good practise mentally, with its weird turn-arounds.
I read recently that this song is in 13/8 or something. Dammed if I have ever thought it was anything that complicated -- if I had thought it was in 13/8 or 12/8 or whatever, I would have shat myself years ago and left it alone. No, for me, this is simply a 4/4 beat that shifts by half a bar every now and again. Much easier to cope with that line of thought, if you ask me!
Until yesterday, I had not realised the bass drum is actually pounding out quarter notes -- I had only ever played on the one and three. That caught me on the hop a bit (you try changing after 25 years playing 1 and 3!), but it definitely keeps the song skipping along much better. I LOVE the crash hits on the 'I', 'I', 'I'; and the tom thing coming out of that section and back to the verse is a real blast.
The outro (before the massive tom ending) is fun, and you need to concentrate, otherwise you can easily pop out of the fill on the turn around in the wrong part of the bar! The massive tom ending is a bit manic, and of course always sounds crap on your own - presumably Phil and Chester were both hitting big fat deep toms simultaneously (and one of'em thought they would hit a cymbal or two for good measure)!
I have not really prepared this cover much, so if someone wants to have a go at me for dropping a beat or a fill or whatever, fine: this is pretty much how I have played it for 25 years, so this is what you get! Hope it is not too boring for you!

Thank you!
Yes, I have been thinking of posting Domino, 'cos I can just about play it. It's not easy though, especially the last couple minutes!
I am gonna be posting the 20 minutes of 'Old Medley' off 'We Can't Dance' very soon. And also the old medley they did on their previous tour, which included In That Quiet Earth. Epic.
Have a look at my channel for list of forthcoming vids.

I's 17, and a percussionist, and a huge Genesis fan, just like my father. If you want your son to enjoy Genesis as much as you just keep playing it for him while hes young and one day he will apreciate the talent, especially if you get him into drumming. Good stuuf, keep it up.

Yes, there are some signs that he is now at least recognising when it is on!
As for him drumming - well, he ignores the kit altogether! All his friends froth at the mouth and want to play it, but it bores him!!! His little sister is similarly disinterested - I guess they are too used to it. However, both of 'em are showing a talent and keen interest in keyboards - perhaps they will want to play like a certain Mr Banks?!

That is great. I really hope they can get in to it. We all know the world need some talent. Just be careful about pushing them to early because they could lose interest. It happened with my sister and the piano.

Sticks would be too loud for the way I record these videos. I am playing a cd player as loud as I can, and using a simple camcorder to record sound (and vision). If I used sticks, you would not hear any of the music at all!

Thanks again for putting this up... While I lack a full set, I have been practicing on this one (and Abacab) with my sticks. :) Good practice.

Wow this was great. I love this song - got it from one of my dad's CDs.
I'd love to learn how to play this, but am no good at picking stuff up from sound. If you have a spare moment could you write it down for me? Notation or tab is fine, but I'd prefer tab, but then again, only if you have a spare time.

Thank you!
I am afraid that even if I had the time (which I don't!) I cannot write out drum music! I am self taught, and learnt everything by ear. Certainly never learned how to read or write drum music. Can I suggest that if you listen AND watch my video of this, that should assist you greatly. Visual aids often work wonders.
I do sort of write out my own form of drum music, for tracks or parts that do my head in. But it is not 'official' notation - only I would understand it!

Thanks for the reply anyway, and I will have a shot at it. And self-taught? I could've sworn you had some lessons in there. ;)
But anyway, thanks. I will have a go!

Like I say in my description, if I had thought this song was in 13/4 or something, I would have crapped myself! I just think of it as 4/4, but with a nice little inversion thing every few bars!

Wow! I just had to see, if anyone else had done this song at a "drum cover". I just uploaded it myself, maybe You want to take a look at it..? My version is a studio, so no comparision needed. :) Really nice going, man! Enjoyed it!

Hello, and thank you!
Have only been able to watch the first minute or so of your cover so far - sorry! It looks pretty good to me! I will watch it when I get home tonite, and leave a comment.

who do you think has a more powerful drum sound? phil or chester? sorry for all the questions just wanna know thoughts from a great drummer.

In some ways it depends on what you mean by 'power'. Anyway, my instinctive answer is Chester - he plays with a real deep groove that makes all the songs he does come across with real epic 'oomph'. Think of the closing minutes of Supper's Ready for example - that is Power with a capital 'P'. Phil's playing, IMHO, is much more suited to playing solo's or fills or accents on top of Chester's groove - something that really works. Of course, Phil can lay down epic grooves too - Squonk studio!

Yes, I think it is time I re-organised my vids into playlists: it's got too cumbersome with only 9 vids shown on the front page!
I have done Rush YYZ on here, but not really capable of any other Rush songs, apart from first half of Strangiata, which I am thinking of posting at some point. Who and Boston not really my cup of tea!
