ELCOT has requirements for the laptops. The requirements are that they must be able to run any of the Linux-distributions openSUSE or Ubuntu, and that they must be able to withstand the pressure of a 92 kg Indian standing on the computer.

I visited ELCOT, Chennai (Nandanam Office) and found it to be ACER Travelmate 5720 model.
This laptop is real value for money at Rs.31717.00! Although this model was not available with Acer dealer at velachery, chennai a similar model (travelmate 6292 but with 12" WXGA) was priced at Rs.38800 + 4% VAT. Whereas ELCOT's advantages are: 320 GB hard disk + OpenSuse 10.1 + virtualbox preloaded + 3 yrs intl.warranty.

Acer travelmate's are goddamn awesome. I've had one for 8 years now, not a single hardware problem. My adapter blew once, but that was my fault, the electricity blew out all my adapters.
But I was aiming at the gray laptop, the one closest to the camera, isn't that a Dell? Looks like it, but the other is definetly an Acer.

I ordered a laptop,but there are issues like no on time delivery and no proper customer support over phone.. just point each other for any answer by giving different extensions of phone number to contact!..But great laptop they sell!!

The laptops have arrived even two weeks ago from Taiwan. Installation of two operating systems and then testing the laptop for various parameters has been going on. On 19th Aug night, the laptop was cleared for "ghosting" at Acer's factory in Pondicherry.
Despatch would commence from Acer's factory from 21st onwards. Apologies for the mild confusion (The MD was transferred out and the new MD had not joined. A mild confusion has arisen due to this). Umashankar (20th Aug)

Acer Travelmate comes with Suse Linux Enterprise Edition with one year upgrade support. ELCOT has loaded it with Ubuntu (latest version) with highly advanced features such as online software installation features, 3D desktop etc.
For installing any software, the user has to go to the add/remove menu and type the name of the software. Ubuntu searches the net, downloads it and then installs the software. Pretty cooool.

In normal use the top casing and also the hinges break down. With Mag. Alloy casing the user gets fully protected from such damages and also scratches. Value for money. That is what ELCOT wishes to offer. The home notebooks are meant for one year operation and there is no guarantee for the plastics after one year. Commercial notebooks are designed to last long.

I think i should see the laptop on tube for another month still these guys are doing the same problem "late delivery"...
Think to get money back!!because GM45 got released and i think they will supply the laptop next year!!!

I have booked a notebook too I booked it on 14 Jul 2008 ! A mail 2 days ago says that I'll recieve it in "4-5 weeks" the terms of delivery stated 4-5 wks from the date of booking.
I'm made to wait twice as much!
The helpline and the email support is hopeless! There are know replies.
How can you count on ELCOT for honoring the contract obligations?
If things were like this even before delivery I can only expect the worst after this!
Please dont book! this is a CON JOB!

i have applied for laptop on 12july,its is confirmed on 17-july and send the msg that we will deliver it by 4-5 weeks,once again government departmet proved its inability in delivering the scheeme(laptop),people are worried about this issue,by today its almost 6 weeks completed i have not recived it,how can the elcot can be belived by people by next time, when they come next infront of public, even its not in a proper way to respond,

hey mallikarjunpalagiri & pharmwhiz u both guys ordered it on 12 and 14 july and think about the state guys like me and others who have ordered on 10 july or before, totally exhausted and god damn angry...
I went to ELCOT personally twice for tracking the status of laptop delivery but these irresponsible peoples try to give numerous excuses, I totally got messed up...
man if I directly ordered LAPTOP from agent or showroom it wouldn't had taken hardly about a weeks for delivery(prices dropped).
