This should explain it for you. Watch "Who Killed The Electric Car?" We don't need Hydrogen cars, batteries will work just fine for most people.

Requiring platinum ... ( 1 month ago by ceriman)
Requiring platinum and special membranes, H2 fuelcells for cars cost a half million dollars each, that's why those cars aren't available for sale. That's also why Ballard dropped out of the automotive fuelcell market - a handful of research vehicles wasn't enough to keep the business going.

you can:
1. compress to 10,000 psi, each gallon giving 1/5 the energy of 1 gallon of gasoline.
2. chill to ultracold -420 F. Each gallon of liquid H2 has 1/4 the energy of a gallon of gasoline.
3. Attach those atoms to long chains of carbon atoms, 8 carbon chains holding 18 hydrogen atoms is optimum, and that IS gasoline.

electric cars are better for the general public now, but we do not have battery's good enough more then about 40 or so miles. however hydrogen does not require battery's but it cannot easily be compressed at home.
All the talk of ... ( 1 month ago by andriod1234)
All the talk of Hydrogen being a clean alternative to natural gas, coal, petrol, and oil is only partialy true. First in order to get hydrogen you need to use more electricity than hydrogen creates to produce it, ( this electricity has to come form somewhere meaning coal, solar, wind or oil. Which is what were trying to get out of.) Also if we do it the Natural gas conversion way, we will make just as much an impact to the environment as oil has. Not to mention The methane used creates nitrogen.

all we have to do now is to convince people that 10,000psi compressed tanks are safe to sit on. muwhahah. I know the air powered cars have carbon fiber around the tanks in case of explosions. this prevents shrapnel flying around.

android1234, we are trying to get out of oil and coal dependency. NOT wind and solar power! they are sources of "renewable energy" or sustainable energy resources. at the moment we will generate electricity burning coal but when that runs out we will probably turn to hydroelectricity.

hydrogen is going nowhere. you need far too much of it to make a trip. Nobody wants to invests in the infrastructure and build millions of refueling stations before anybody even has a hydrogen car. Watch this- Air Car (1 of 2) from France. It can already do 100km trips and uses compressed air. I think people fail to realise this. Air is the future!!

there's more then ... ( 3 weeks ago by sswinterborn)
there's more then one way of producing hydrogen, electrolysis is one way to do it but u can also get it using biological means. Algae produces hydrogen when in the right environment, and recently they have discovered a new strain of algae that can actually produce hydrogen at a 10-30% efficiency rate. Although it won't produce enough to replace oil or fossil fuels and other not-so-clean energy, it is enough to make a large difference.

Batteries are enough? yea, where does electricity come from??
we need different energy. hydrogen/water/air is the way to go.
Hydrogen fuel cells ... ( 2 weeks ago by Manoo62)
Hydrogen fuel cells are a complete waste of time. Commercial quantities of H2 almost all come from natural gas. It is far more fuel efficient and less poluting to simply burn the gas as fuel in the first place. Then there is the massive cost of producing them plus the huge amount of energy it requires to make them. The whole idea is utterly ridiculus.

So all we have to do now is figure out a way to produce that hydrogen for our cars with a lesser to no amount of pollution and we're set! I'm sure there's a way, we just haven't found it yet.

if you go on the ballard website and take a look at the stacks you'll see from the data sheets that a little 1.63kW one requires a flow of 19.1 litres of hydrogen per minute! (at 0.3 to 0.5bar) that's a LOT of hydrogen needed from half a 'joecell'!

how can i separate the hydrogen and oxygen after the electrolysis, i mean how can i have only hydrogen in a gallon or another container?

Hydrogen is flammable. If hydrogen is in the car and it were to crash, it could blow up if a tiny spark was made during the collision. There are many car accidents happening. It would be mini hindenburgs every 2 hours.
Unless the design of the hydrogen tank is protected somehow.
