Cousins Fred and Fannie are coming over to visit. The recent headlines are dire and they ought to be, because this bailout by Uncle Sam is going to be expensive.
The four-step rescue plan involves the Federal Reserve and the U.S. Treasury. First, we increase Fannie and Freddie's portfolio of mortgage-backed securities through the end of 2009. Then we reduce them by 10 percent each year, starting in 2010.
The plan establishes a special class of shares owned by Treasury that gives preference to the government's investment over those owned by other shareholders.
The plan creates a credit facility to lend up to $100 billion to each of the companies - as a means for encouraging continued investment in the companies.
Finally, as a temporary program, the U.S. Treasury will invest in new mortgage-backed securities. It plans to invest $5 billion in the next month alone.
Monday. Once again, when the financial companies are in the news, it is for bad reasons, and it is more likely that we will be punished than rewarded for taking risk.

Regulierapparate und Bankiers hatten Reden gehalten, die auf Stabilisieren der 158 Jahre alten Anlagebank gezielt worden sind, aber Nachrichten berichtet, dass Sonntag gesagt hat, dass der Barclays Plc von Britannien und Bank Amerika, das gegen Kaufen von Lehman Brüdern entschieden wird.
Lehman war einmal das vierte die größte Anlagebank in den Vereinigten Staaten, aber schlechte Investitionen in Immobilie und andere Gebiete haben einen drastischen Sturz im Wert von Lehman Anteilen kürzlich gebracht.
