Thank you for mentioning that she was never off-pitch - she wasn't. Unfortunately, in world of imperfection, no one is. Each singer has something to offer, and something not as attractive to offer. Mentioning Tebaldi, Milanov, and Rysank as examples of pitch problems is less than kind, considering the enormous, glorious, great artists of our time.

I could easily comment on Callas's less then attractive timbre, and seriously wide vibrato and wobble towards the end- but I won't, because it never detracted from her artistry, and neither did pitch imperfections detract from the others you mention. I understand the reply was to an ignorant comment, but it could have been said differently.

if i was talking about rysanek-tebaldi and milanov at the end of their careers believe me the list of flaws wouldnt fit in this page. Their enormous pitch problem was apparent from their early-peak years

I was simply attempting to poing out the disparity between finding the faults, and finding the greatness. If it's your choice to is to ingore the tremendous contributions those ladies gave the world, that's your right. To me it sounds rather narrow and absolute. I'm not here to fill a page with the vocal flaws for anyone.

Wonderful singing by La Divina, The One and Only! It's another heartbreaking aria from the Queen of Opera ! I just love and adore her so much !

Flame away kids....but read first.
Love Callas as an actress who sings - I think her Tosca is definative.
Purely as a singer - not so much. Reedy and thin, with some intonation problems.Granted,. the recording technology (in her early career) was not there, but the later recital work on video is just painful to listen to. Not watch, but to listen to.
But again, before the rabid Callas fans nail me up, as a Actress who sings - absolutely a genius.

about pauldave : I dont have any understanding for your criticism regarding Maria Callas singing. Do you really think she would have become that world famous just for terrific acting ? As an opera singer ?? Give me a break!
As for me and for so many other admirers of her art her singing is not only wonderful and heartbreaking it is just La Callas, La Divina! It may not be perfect, but what in the world of opera is perfect? She still gives so much joy whenever her music is being played!

edgardodiraven:
Let me clarify - I think Callas did become world famous for terrific acting and for her vocal ability. It was the power of both skills combined that made her a remarkable and groundbreaking artist. Up until then, most singers were a little tough to watch - they just stood there and sang.
Callas added a new dimention to Opera - drama, empathy, character involvement...in other words, spectacular acting combined with good singing.

PaulDave, may I suggest a couple of recordings that show Callas, the supreme vocalist? Nabucco (1949), Armida (1952), I Puritani (1952), La Traviata (1951), Norma (1955), Lucia di Lammermoor (1954, live, La Scala), Aida (1951), Anna Bolena (1957), La Sonnambula (1955), Macbeth (1952), Medea (1953)....

( 1 week ago by franaldunate)
