My Home Theater Setup (Update)

Uploaded by: canderton01
Video Description:
All that's new really is my 40GB PS3. I kinda re-explain things... whatever just watch it and tell me what you think. Please excuse the crappy quality of my camera.
UPDATE: This video is kinda old now as well as I am continually changing/upgrading my setup. I now have an Onkyo 606 7.1ch receiver, and a Cerwin Vega VE-5C center speaker.
Recorded with my Samsung SYNC(SGH-A707)

And yes I will add you sometime within this week, I've got to get a new XBL card.
Actually, you know ... ( 4 months ago by canderton01)
Actually, you know what? Forget everything about the SR576 I just said. I started looking, I can get the SR606 which has Dolby True HD, HDMI upscaling, and 90wpc for the same price as the SR576 at Circuit City for $399. That's a damn good deal!
You have like 2 ... ( 3 months ago by freddielololol)
You have like 2 hours, but the Onkyo 705 is going for $450 refurbished right now with a discount on their site (shoponkyo . com). I think you get an additional discount for registering of like 10$ too. The deal ends at midnight tonight though.
I've heard the 705 a few times and it's a very nice sounding receiver with a crazy feature set for the price. Might want to check that out before you pull the trigger on the 606.

Just saw you already got the 606, sorry about that. Good luck with it.

Thanks, I just got everything hooked up. So far everything is good. Even out of the box it sounded AMAZING. I ran the Audessy EQ thing as well. But the overall SQ is SOO much better than the old Yammie.

Yeah, I love my Onkyo. I've used a TX-SR502 for about 4 years and it's a really nice sounding unit considering what it cost and it's competitors at the time. I remember that it sounded about as nice as the Marantz and H/K in the next tier up, but it pretty much blew away everything at it's price point in both features and SQ. I'll probably use it until I have to upgrade for HDMI (though I would definetely jump on that 705 right now if I had the money). Have fun with the 606.
Thanks, does the ... ( 3 months ago by canderton01)
Thanks, does the 502 have component inputs? And I also love how Onkyo accurately rates the power output of their equipment. The 606 is so powerful that I have it powering my pair of Cerwin Vega VE-12's as my mains. It sounds WAY better and more powerful than my "100 wpc" Sony. Sound & Vision magazine did some lab tests on the 605 which was also rated at 90wpc, and it put out 85wpc in 5.1 and 80wpc in 7.1 You can expect the REAL power output to be within 5-10 watts of its rated power with an Onk.
And if you are ... ( 3 months ago by canderton01)
And if you are wanting to upgrade to the 705, you might want to do that soon because they are introducing the 706 sometime later this year(it's listed on Onkyo's website as "coming soon") So you might be able to snag the 705 for cheap. I saw it for around $500 on Amazon. Just thought I would let you know.
Thanks for the comments!

Yeah, I think it was one of the first at the price range to have component ins (I remember Sony did too at the time, but their 300$ model was a joke with SQ). I think the X02 line was also one of the first to have ProLogic IIx, giving the center surround(s) (mine is 6.1, the higher end stuff was 7.1 then) a discrete signal. Those two things and the high current amps were what influenced my decision in the features department. I do wish it had preouts and a phono input but it's a great receiver.

I definetely would if I had the money. As I said, I have heard it on many occasions, even with my speakers (Cambridge Soundworks used to use it to demo their speakers) and it's a very nice sounding receiver.
Yeah, pre-outs ... ( 3 months ago by canderton01)
Yeah, pre-outs would be nice. But 90wpc is plenty for me(right now at least) I even have it powering my Cerwins and they sound great. And yes, sony is a joke as far as audio equipment goes, they should stick with tvs and playstation lol. And the high current amp was one of the things that led me to the 606. I'm going to upgrade speakers around Christmas. I plan on getting some Polk Audio M40's(Bi-amped)as my mains, M30's for surrounds, CS1 center, and I still haven't decided on a sub yet.
Check out HSU ... ( 3 months ago by freddielololol)
Check out HSU research for subs. I haven't heard them personally but I've read they're very good for their price point. I was very close to buying one before I found my current sub (Cambridge SoundWorks P205) for $400 below retail....And I've still thought about selling it to try to get an HSU. SVS also makes nice subs for the price from what I've read. Just stay away from cheap Velos....Not musical at all, just boom.
Yeah, I was ... ( 3 months ago by canderton01)
Yeah, I was planning to get a Polk PSW10 or PSW303 but I've heard they aren't a very good value. I found a 12'' Dayton sub for $150 and I've heard it's a great value but like most other low-end subs, it's boomy. I've heard nothing but good things about HSU subs and I really like the STF-1. It's just the right size for my small room. It's a bit over my budget so I will probably get it down the road(maybe next spring). I would rather wait and get a good sub instead of getting a mediocre sub now.
I've never really ... ( 3 months ago by freddielololol)
I've never really cared for the Polk subs I've heard, but it's been a few years and I may be biased as Polks have never really impressed me. Have you been to any audio shops yet to listen to anything else? Now is the time to listen to everything within your budget if you're planning on making a purchase around christmas. Paradigm Monitors are a good starting point for auditioning on a tight budget, but in the end if Polk sounds right to you, go for it.
By the way, Polk ... ( 3 months ago by freddielololol)
By the way, Polk M50s are on Jr . com for $60 more than the 40s ($260) if you like/have room for towers.
Thanks for the tip, ... ( 3 months ago by canderton01)
Thanks for the tip, but sadly I don't have room for anymore towers. My Cerwin Vegas are so big so I really can't fit anymore towers in my room. And yes I've also heard good things about the Paradigm Monitors. And I really don't have that many audio shops around me other than the big box stores. Tweeter closed like a year ago, and then there's HiFi Buys but they only sell REALLY high-end equipment like B&W, Focal, and Monitor Audio.
Polks just seem to have an excellent bang-for-you-buck value.
Yeah Polks are ... ( 3 months ago by freddielololol)
Yeah Polks are nicely priced, but I would make sure you get some type of trial period. I've always found them to be pretty bright, and Onkyos are bright as well, so they don't pair well together to my ears. I'm a fan of a much softer, warm sound (used to be called the New England or Boston sound) hence why I landed on Cambridge Soundworks (might want to look into them too, they're having a huge clearance right now (M80s are nice). They balance out well with the Onkyo being on the brighter side.
Yeah, I think HiFi ... ( 3 months ago by canderton01)
Yeah, I think HiFi buys sells Cambridge equipment too. And yeah, the Onkyo is a little bright, but I still like it. The tweeters on my Cerwins are pretty efficient so if a receiver is too bright or even harsh, it will be very uncomfortable to listen to. I've always heard that Denon makes a very warm sounding receiver but you get a lot more for you money(features-wise) with Onkyo so that's why I went with the 606.
Unfortunately, most ... ( 3 months ago by canderton01)
Unfortunately, most Cambridge stuff is out of my budget. I'm trying to stay under $400 for the 5 speakers(mains, center, surrounds) and then I will probably have to save up another couple months until spring to get the HSU STF-1(I've now decided that's the sub that's best for me). I'm not going to skimp out on a sub, so I would rather just wait and save up for a quality subwoofer. And I'm pretty sure that if I get the Polks(from Amazon), I can send them back if I don't like them.

Your shitty system sounds exactly like my Cambridge soundworks computer speakers. Shitty system you have.
Yes, because you ... ( 2 months ago by canderton01)
Yes, because you can make such a fair judgment of how my system sounds from a video recorded by a cameraphone that did not even show my system in operation. And I have since upgraded my equipment, I now have an Onkyo 606 receiver, Cerwin Vega VE-12's as mains, Cerwin Vega VE-5C center, and eventually Polk audio M30's as rears. BTW, where the hell are your videos of your amazing setup? Hmm?
Nice comment dumbass.

Well, I currently don't have the Technics "set up" right now. They have been sitting up in my attic ever since I got my Cerwins(about a year).
They need some work too, the foam on one of the woofers is rotting and the cabinets need some work as well. I hope to eventually get them set up in my bonus room. I've got an old Panasonic receiver from the early 80's that I would like to drive them with.
I'll throw a vid up if I ever get them set up.

thanks man, it's nothing that impressive... but I'm happy with it.
