Because your seeing True! 24P with a 3:2:3 pulldown in 29.97. This is why it has such a great Cinema LQQK!, Unlike Video.

question. I have a V1u and a crappy computer to edit standard def only.
If I use a computer that is HD capable, can I output my video res at 1920x1080 to play on a regular dvd, to be displayed on non-HD televisions?
Thanks.

This looks horrible. I highly doubt it's a HVR-V1U in 24p. I'd think any cinematographer would at least start with a little WHITE BALANCE.

Handheld video makes even the best acted video look like video.
You might want to throw it on a tripod. Also, don't zoom during a shot. That is a golden rule in filmmaking. If you want more tips or want me to die, please respond to this comment. My intent is not to criticize you to death, though. It's to help you improve you craft.

That 'Golden rule' applies to those shooting on film- Ever had a look at Battlestar Galactica footage? Handheld and zooming can really take your focus off the 'Digital homevideo' look of the film and follow the action instead.
This would not have been as good if shot on tripod with no zooming.
Zooms are rarely ... ( 3 months ago by prammaven)
Zooms are rarely ever done on a professional shoot (except except to frame up, but then it's locked off). A very good reason for not zooming on video is that it flattens the apparent depth of your shot. It would be better to track in, in this case-you would lose no depth.
Video, despite its different aesthetic, can at least feel like film. I've been successful with this, and seen other peoples' films that proved its possibility. It's just a question of knowing the rules and sticking to them.

I think the main aspect that was off-putting about this clip was the fact that the audience sounds scattered. They're not all chattering at once like a live audience at a real joust would. They should be roaring in unison during exciting parts. This sounds more like a soccer match (no offense, just suggesting areas for improvement. We all are in a constant state of learning)
Art does have rules ... ( 3 months ago by prammaven)
Art does have rules, animation for example. Physics govern what will and what won't look right onscreen. In the same way, although the physics of movement are already determined by the mass of the subjects, set dressings, and props in a film, there are ways to make a video shoot look as convincing as what you see in the theater.
By the way, where did you get that quote?
