That's total crap EnjoyTheBuffet: He coached 10 years of high school and 2 years at Indiana State before UCLA and his only losing season was his very first as a head coach. He never had a losing season at UCLA before the title string. And Gilbert's involvment is oveblown -- there's no proof he ever bought talent. And every other program had Sam Gilberts of their own. You think Kentucky, Duke, UNC and Indiana were "clean" think again.

Read Bill Walton's own 1978 book moron where he confessed that every player on the team had every single thing pourchased for him during his four years. Of course Duke, UNC and Indiana were totally clean because they had men of honor in charge of those programs. Digger Phelps was right when he said there should be a photo of Sam Gilbert permanently affixed to the top of Wooden's "pyramid of success". Wooden couldn't stand watching Rod Dedeaux and John McKay win their titles so he cheated.

Bob Knight has done it the honorable way and produced a stable of successful coaches such and coach K. Wooden only produced loser coaches such as Larry Farmer and Walt Hazzard. The US olympic committee never once asked Wooden to command a team because they were insiders who knew how Wooden was winning all those ncaa titles and it wasn't with Xs and Os by any means. Wooden wasn't even a top-3 coach of the west coast behind Pete Newell, Bob Boyd, Ralph Miller. The US olympic committee entrusted Bob Knight when he was only 44 years old.

I believe Wooden declined an invitation to coach the team in either 1972 or 1976 because of health reasons (he had a mild heart attack in the early 70s). I'd agree with you about Newell as he was one of the top 2-3 in the game's history at any level. Boyd and Miller? Please. Knight was a great coach, though overrated, and a piece of trash as a person. The Olympics have always been about talent and no one was ever better at taking talented players and molding them into a great team than Wooden

Nice that someone preserved a few snippets from this telecast- it was syndicated and was the first regular season college basketball game to air nationally. It was a very weird atmosphere with the game in the Astrodome using the regular seating.
