The original version of this was lost to time, but it was around at least as early as 1620, probably earlier. It was called "The Elfin Knight" and it was about an elf who kidnapped a girl and told her to do impossible tasks to be freed. Still, beautiful song.

That's probably where the Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme came in, but The Elfin Knight didn't have that in it; that was added sometime in the 19th century, another song might've used the herbs and someone decided to splice it in.
