Joe Long: The Four Seasons Bass Guitarist & Vocals

Uploaded by: drmstout
Video Description:
Joe Long reamins the only member of The Four Seasons not officially inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Despite his extensive contributions to The Four Seasons, Joe Long remains the only member of the group's definitive line up not inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, most likely because he was not one of groups "founders" in the late 1950s. Much controversy exists over this questionable decision, especially in light of the many top-10 hits the group had during his tenure.

Yeah, I thought Joe was Italian. Can't mistake that suave and debonair look. I'm going to send an e-mail to that RRHOF committee and respectfully 1) request that Joe be inducted ASAP, and 2) tell them that they are so anal-retentive for this oversight. (j/k on that 2nd point!)

The Cult Of Joe Long! One of the Best bass players ever. He made the Seasons sound like a Rock band! God Bless Joe Long!

No doubt! When Joe Long joined The Four Seasons they evolved from an older late 1950s Do-Wop style vocal group into a classic 1960s American Rock and Roll Band. It was his talent and style that is often an overlooked catalyst in the band real success. Joe Long belongs in the Hall of Fame with the other band members!

No offense, but did Joe Long really play bass on the Four Seasons records? I always assumed that studio msuicans were used for the instrumental parts on their records.

Joe Long definetly played bass for the Four Seasons especially on live concert dates. Studio musicians were used for the horns sections. All groups use studio musicians in the recording sessions

No offence taken. Joe was not only the bass guitarist but also backup bass vocals, vocal arranger in the studio, on Ed Sullivan, live concerts, etc. He joined the Four Seasons in 1964-1965 when their original bass player left the group. So, rest a sure any Four Seasons bass you hear after 1964 is being plucked by Joe Long.

I remember when the Four Seasons were on the Mike Douglas Show and Frankie Valli was introducing his band mates. When he got to Joe Long he said, "He looks like a Joe!"

In my opinion, Nick Massi is the one who should be in the Hall, even though Long was on some hits (he joined in 66, Seasons producer Charles Callelo was filling in for Massi prior to Long joining). Massi was on countless hits such as:
Sherry
Big Girls Don't Cry
Walk Like A Man
Dawn
Rag Doll
Bye Bye Baby
and countless others. Long was Opus, Tell It To The Rain, Marriane, and some others but the real sound of the seasons is Valli, Gaudio, DeVito, and Massi.

I totally agree with you that the late Nick Massi belongs in the R &R Hall of Fame. However, Joe Long also belongs with the other members- he played the major role in changing the sound and image of The Four Seasons from a 1950s style Do Wop band into a true pop rock and roll group- his arrangements, both vocal and bass, as well as his studio seasons work, numerous TV appearance, the marketing of this image and stage presence from about 1964-1976 gave the group their rock and roll edge.

Joe Long in the Hall of Fame? He is an absolutely great 4 Season and important member of the band. But if he goes in then so should LATER members like Don Ciccone, Gerry Polci and that whole group who was responsible for the 4 Seasons comeback in the mid to late 70's

Joe was a great bass player not only with the four seasons but with his own band after leaving the season "Jersey Bounce". Performing live he was a big part of the show and served as the "MC" in a way. In the studio he was always creative. For something out of the mainstream listen to his bass playing on the Season album "Genuine Imitation Life"; bass players will not be disappointed!

Joe Long was a wonderful bassist, and, like myself, a lefty! He recently retired and sold a very rare lefty 1960 Fender Jazz Bass on Ebay. He played on Opus 17 and lots of other recordings, the performance on Opus alone is reason enough to induct him. After playing bass for over 40 years now, this bass part is still one of the more challenging for me to play. He just plays his ass off on it.

joe long said in an interview that he was never an actual partner in the group. just an employee. he played bass on most of the tracks as a studio musician. tommy and bob didnt play much on the mid 60s recordings.

If Joey was to be inducted, he would be categorizes as a "Contributing Artist," as he was not one of the original Four Seasons. So would Don Ciccone and Gerry Polci for their work with the Seasons in the '70s.

Hey I agree with you that Joe was shafted but that's the way the RnR Hall of SHAME is. How many years was Cindy Birdsong in the Supremes and she didn't get inducted with them either.
The 4 Seasons did their best music with Joe in the group.
