In recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests, the 2008 Smart Fortwo, the smallest car for sale in the US market, earned the top rating of good for front and side crash protection. Its seat/head restraints earned the second highest rating of acceptable for protection against whiplash in rear impacts. Smart Fortwo is classified a microcar, meaning it's smaller even than minicars. Weighing about 1,800 pounds, the Smart is more than 3 feet shorter and almost 700 pounds lighter than a Mini Cooper.

There is NOTHING smart about the SMART CAR. Its main selling point is that is supposedly gets good gas mileage, but when you read more about the car you realize its false marketing to take advantage of the gas crisis. The thing only gets 35-40MPG and for a car that size I think anyone with common sense would stay with a regular sedan. I see people driving these and they like to think they are "going green" that phrase is already overused and annoying.

Good thing the F150 isn't a car then. Its a full frame truck. The GL is a mommywagon. Its no more a truck than a Honda CRV is. It uses the M-class unibody architecture. I don't care about panel gaps and such, when push comes to shove, the vehicle with a full frame will be more likely to protect you in an accident.

If you are the one being hit a larger vehicle is far more advantageous. Weight is inertia which is the ability to absorb force. The sheer mass of a large vehicle can absorb impact energy. Large vehicles also have larger crush zones to absorb energy. All else being equal weight wins 10/10 times.

A vehicle with a strong ass body such as any German car is more likely to protect you. Who cares how big it is. And Mercedes' bodies are way stronger than American.

Did you even read my comment? A unibody vehicle is NOT as "strong" as a full-frame one. I don't care who the manufacturers are. Full-frame construction is more durable and more capable of absorbing force, hence making it safer for you.
An no Mercedes's vehicles are nothing special when it comes to safety. I'd look to Volvo for leadership in that area.

Yeah I read your BS comment. When the opportunity comes, try this: Get your junky Ford and get any German car side by side.. Take a hammer and hit each car with equal force and see which one yeilds more damage. Ford bodies are garbage, anyone who knows about auto body knows that German/Swedish cars are the best with Japanese being the worst unless you're looking at Lexus or Infiniti. So don't try to make me believe Ford bodies are tougher, because that is completely false.

Well, they are warming over it's key limitations when in a crash. While the car holds together well, the concern is the increased force applied to the driver due to the lack of suitable crumple zone. An even greater risk not mentioned, is the effects of a full speed rear impact of a larger vehicle (not same weight as tested) or worse still, sandwich between two larger vehicles

Smart cars were carefully designed to resist at any kind of impact, he has limtis as any other car, but in a frontal crash against another vehicle, this car 'takes' the absortion areas of it. Ther's another real crash test between a Smart and a Mercedes E class that you most see. But... Above all, this small and very 'smart' car passed the EuroNCAP crash tests pretty well.
