This was recorded for the BBCs Old Grey Whistle Test in October/ November 1984 in the middle of their first UK tour. I paid £1 to see them at the Liverpool Royal Court. Awesome.

REM came over to establish themself in the mid 80s because the british press considered them a good original Indie band whereas in the US they were considered to be 'Weird', anti-rock and not coming from NY or California but Georgia made them not very fashionable. It was also due to U2 plugging them in every interview they had at the time. They played with U2 at the Milton Keynes bowl in 1985. They had bottles and fruit thrown at them - they went off after 10 minutes.

LOL, this brings back a great memory. Caught REM at Duke auditorium (not Cameron) in '84 and Stipe did Moon River a capella.
About 1/2 through Stipe hits about a 2 second pause and just then in the silence somebody in the balcony yells out "FUUUCK YOU!" at the top of his lungs.
Stipe stopped the song and said "Hold on. We're gonna go back and do this over again from the start."
Stipe did it again a capella from the beginning, and that time around nobody yelled anything. Coolest thing ever.
