Wikipedia is your friend. Words by Englishman John Newton, a penitent slave trader, in 1772, although the verse "When we've been gone 10000 years" was added later. This wasn't the only music it was originally sung to, and the composer is unknown.
This version sounds great. I think I like it better than Judy Collins.

For stringbean555 Amazing grace was written by John Newton in 1772. He was a slave trader, who turned to God when his ship was almost lost during a storm at sea. His helplessness in the storm let him see that it was only by God's Grace that he did not die in it.
