Whow this is such an amazing song! The way she almost whispers the song makes it haunting I think. Is the original text written for a woman or a man? I like the way both man and women are able to sing the song with the two different lyrics! awesome!

It's a part of American culture, too, Paul Lost. We brought it with us when we came here, and we improved it, in my opinion. If you don't agree, please listen to your version. May the *uck of the Irish be upon ye!

This beautiful 17th century Anglo-Scots border ballad came to us through Northern Ireland to the American Appalachians in the 18th century...original lyrics included ..."I'll go to the Clyde for to mourn and weep"...

Judy Collins has such an enchanting voice. I've been curious as to how this song goes for a while. Now I know! It's very melodious and forlorn.
Array ( 4 weeks ago by frphilipmullen)
This ancient & beautiful Anglo-Scots Border Balled travelled to Northern Ireland in the 17th century, and from thence to North America......and the Appalachian Mountains....
where our Hillbilly ancestors changed the original Scottish lyric, "....I'll go to the Clyde for to mourn and weep...." to ".....I'll climb up the mountain....".
No wonder SOME Irish want to claim this ballad all for themselves!

whatever this song's roots were, all i can say is that it brings shivers up and down my spine, and that's all that really matters to me...one must be really coldharted to find this boring, and not feel the longing, the sorrow and the painful solitude coming out of Judy Collins'vocal cords...bravo to Judy, amazing rendition of a great classic, and my favorite, followed by the Nina Simone's one

It is UNKNOWN whether it is an Irish or Scottish song, its Celtic.
BUT...for this version they took both Irish and Scottish songs for the melody on the piano...

I first heard this song back in the early 60's and always loved it. First time hearing Joan Collins sing it(can't locate the original) but she does a great job.

Have fun playing it on your clarinet, but be forewarned: you'll have Finlay and a bunch of other nuts telling you that some old fart named Christy Moore is the only one who can sing it or play it.
Maybe they say ... ( 13 hours ago by stillwaterguy04)
Maybe they say Christy is the only one who can do it because they're Irish-centric nuts.
