There's a lot of additional stuff going on in this film that I haven't covered, including a lot of things I didn't notice til after posting the review.
One possibility is that little Danny let him out, while his mother was asleep. There's a character cross symbolism thing going on, in which Danny seems to become Jack and vice versa ("all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" literally). Haven't figured it out though, if there's even something in it.
An expanded shining review is needed.

yes yes
always thought danny was the one who could have let out jack.
but gotto rewatch the film about 2 times more to figure out the logic
Awesome Rob, you ... ( 1 month ago by blackspacebluesky)
Awesome Rob, you sparked in me a greater awareness of film. I appreciate more now the role & possibilities a director/storyteller has. I started thinking of films to analyze myself & its a task; either there is nothing to analyze or there is no subtlty. Do you go by genre, director or just a hunch? I thought for awhile & "Natural Born Killers" finally came to mind. I watched it & saw a twisted biblical-type narrative of innocents lost, fallen angels, serpents, demons & (un)holy retribution.

I took it as an actual evil ghost letting Jack out. I don't think Danny knew he was in there.
From what I remember there were very little actual physical manifestations of the supernatural in the film, besides the telepathy & visions of ghosts. Everything seemed to be in their heads up until that point. The same ghost appears to Wendy, who we were never previously lead into believing had 'the shining'. It could've been the physical confirmation of an evil presence.

NBK is great to analyze as it relies on aesthetic communication instead of just dialogue. How do I pick movies? No easy answer. Certain directors like Kubrick /Hitchcock are reliable. Then there's Ridley Scott, who generally makes shallow eye candy, but somehow made Alien and Bladerunner which are incredibly deep and symbolic. The main thing I look for is films that have multiple layers of meaning, in which the obvious surface narrative has prevented ppl from even suspecting a hidden theme.

Haha. I was reading ... ( 1 month ago by robag88)
Haha. I was reading about that scene in one of Kubrick's biographies recently. Nicholson said that he and Kubricke created that scene based upon Nicholson's real life experience of trying to write scripts in the presence of his first wife (before he was a star). So it seems that the content of that scene was very heartfelt for him. He got a divorce.

Someone emailed it to me. They said they got it from a former crew member who worked on the production.

It seems to me that the purpose of a film is defeated by attempting to prevent people from even suspecting the theme. Granted, film should encourage thought, but it should not appeal exclusively to the analytical mind, either.

If the purpose is ... ( 1 month ago by robag88)
If the purpose is to make something ppl can easily understand in one viewing with little mental effort then I'd agree.
If the purpose is to encourage ppl to think in ways they aren't used to and to communicate controversial themes in a way that bypasses the attention of the film funders (thus securing funding for future films) then subliminals are essential.

That's what people (who were intelligent at least) said whne Kubrick released A Clockwork Orange. Yet, people are just too stupid, ignorant, or easily offended to appreciate it's greatness.

In Art, a rainbow is a symbol of the link between earth and heaven (men and god).
