Interesting this is on a purple label 78, a colour introduced in the UK around 1956. When first issued here, it had a green/brown label with gold lettering. It was among the first
78s I purchased. I have it still!

I remember standing on the stool every time this came on so I could get closer to the little radio. Daddy and I in the kitchen and he would whistle along. It was always Dad and I in the morning. Momma said she wouldn't talk to him until he had a cup of coffee..LOL

It may be a US pressing... or it may be the "1600 Series" reissue of this record... Capitol's "1600 Series" of 78s and 45s were reissues of the labels early hits (from its founding in the mid-40s to the early 50s).

It's called a "78" record. Record speed. They all had a bit of a "tinny" sound.

You also have to remember that before Les, there were no electric guitars. He invented them.

steady on... not quite i'm afraid. he had a lot to do with the birth of the solid body electric, but he didn't invent the lelctric guitar.

Actually, Fender had the Broadcaster, Esquire, Nocaster, and then the Telecaster before the Les Paul model came out from Gibson. It was sucessful because it was Gibson's competetor with Fender solidbody guitars. Because of the type of pickups used in Les Pauls, they sound more distorted. So using a Les Paul model versus a Fender mostly depends on if you want deeper tone and more distortion (Gibson) or twangy and clean (Fender).

absolutely. i was referring to les's 'log' guitar experiments in the '40s though. he was working on almost the same stuff as leo at roughly the same time, but Gibson turned him away until Leo had got going and they needed to compete.
my les paul is a replica '56 gold top with P90s, it sounds lovely.

This was originally released in the spring of 1951 (and this appears to be the original "78" issue), and competed with Patti Page's version on Mercury for the "best-selling" hit at the time....

Sadly, the late 1940s and early 1950s are are very ignored time period in popular music history, sandwiched between the Big Band/Swing era and the Doo Wop/ Early Rock & Roll era. The lack of "excitement" perhaps may be why this time period getsthe void. Records from this era are quite cheap on eBay as well.

I first heard this song at a friend's house in the early 1950's and fell in love with it. I couldn't understanding most of the lyrics at that time because I was a new immigrant from China. This song, and many others of the 1950's, helped in making me feel happy living in the United States.
