I'm not quite sure if he "died" then. I mean, he says that he went farther than passing out but he also says his chakra is stuck and he can't go into the avatar state without it.
But, if he were to die in the avatar state (which if he did die then, this would happen), he would no longer be the avatar and all his past lives would cease to exist in the spirit world. Which can't be true cuz Roku came back. And it shows on the DVD case of the last, he's in the Avatar state.

Actually, Aang DID in fact die, but Katara saved him with SPIRIT water, reviving not only him, but the avatar cycle and his past lives.

But that still doesn't make sense. Why would the creators of Avatar have gone through with the "if you die in the avatar state..." and then let Aang die but miraclously come back to life and still be the Avatar? Spirit or not, they really screwed this up.

To heal Zuko's face? Hmm, I don't know but, even so, they kind of messed that up. They shouldn't have said that the avatar would cease to exist if he died. They should have just left it at his chalkra is stuck and that he regularly died and came back to life- with the chalkra still stuck. Anyways, I still love Avatar. And I'll continue to watch it. Because... I love it and it is still good.

That's a really flimsy excuse. The creators of Avatar should not have even bothered with the "die in spirit mode = no more avatars".
And, how could it heal his avatar spirit? When Roku was explaining it, the spirit disappeared and didn't live in the spirit world anymore. So... there wouldn't have been any avatar spirit to heal.
