all the components ... ( 4 months ago by jhachey222)
all the components of the amp effect the sound. the tubes, the transistors, the speaker, the cabinet, the wiring, everything. thats why authentic all tube amps never sound the same. the charecter differs between the amps.

If you're saying the rectifier has a marked effect on the sound you might as well say the handle on the tops affects the sound. WHATS THIS? THE VOLUME KNOB IS PLASTIC? HOW WILL I GET MY TUBE TONES NOW?
Everything affects the sound, but having a solid state recitifer is doing next to nothing to sound, I've seen an AC30 with a home made rectifier in it made out of neccessity, it didn't any less great. Stop tone-questing and nit-picking and use your ears.

handles? now you're just being ridiculous. all the ELECTRONIC components play a role in the sound. and it's not nit picking. i find a difference, you don't. to each his own.

both the twin amp and the twin reverb have solid state rectifiers, and they are some of the most renown tube amps in the music industry, depending upon genre, only the way upper end hand-wired amps are the ones with tube rectifiers.

nah, dude. the twin amp uses tubes in the rectifier but the twin reverb uses a SS rectifier. meh, to each his own. personally, solid state devices in amps i find are tone killers. but the bassman, champ, deluxe reverb, super reverb, vibroverb, JTM45, and the bluesbreaker all had tube rectifiers. and to me, those are the best sounding amps in history.
Rubbish. The ... ( 4 months ago by sleakitweasel)
Rubbish. The amplifier when pushed to the maximum output will sound different with a solid state rectifier which will maintain the plate voltages to the valves. The valve rectifier tends to sag when maximum output is reached and will compress the overall output as the plate voltages will drop resulting in a more compressed sound.
Learn about it before you post pish.

Good call and I agree. SS rectifiers also make harsh switching noise as they turn on an off, or at least a lot more than tube rectifiers do. That can add to high frequency harshness depending on the voicing of the amp etc. If anyone has a hangup over diodes, do what I did in my old marshall and replace them with FREDs instead.
Have you ever heard ... ( 3 months ago by HelloImJonesy1)
Have you ever heard the same amp but one with a tube rectifier, and the other with a SS? I agree that a tube rectifier will make a little difference, but when have something like that, not really very reliable.
They type of ... ( 3 months ago by hart261)
They type of rectifier actually does play a role in the sound. Tube rectifiers produce a greater amount of what amp tech's refer to as "sag." Solid State rectifiers have little to no "sag" and are typically found in amps known for their remarkable clea tone. You really shouldn't make such polarizing comments on a subject you cleary know so little about

as always, tube powered amplifiers always have a better output signal than a transistor. plain and simple, anything tube powered has better performance than anything transistor powered.

Nice axe, i was playing a nashville tele through a champ 600 and traded it for a peavey valve king royal 8! The peavey kicked it's ass, which I was very sad about b/c I am a fender man. You should get a tube screamer ts7. Nice playin!

the deluxe reverb and the twin reverb are practically the same amp, only the wattage and speaker configuration vary.

yes i know, but we were talking about the solid-state rectifiers vs tube rectifiers; and if the deluxe reverb has a tube rectifier then the twin should have one as well...

It should, but it doesn't. thats why they sound different.

btw what tube amp would you choose in a $1300 price range....
I play blues, classic rock, jazz, some funk and i have an epiphone les paul and a fender USA strat....
I was thinking on getting the twin reverb with a nice tube distortion pedal or a fender supersonic....etc.
Any ideas?
oooohhhh get a vox ... ( 1 month ago by athemilkman)
oooohhhh get a vox ac30! its AMAZING for jazz. it was a nice rainy day today so i found the perfect tone and played a whole lotta swing'n blues. As far as classic rock, if pared with output pickups or a nice fuzz, its perfect for zeppelin. middle position high output strat, great stevie ray vaughn. i dont play much funk, so try it out for that. I have the half stack with vox speakers (couldnt afford alnico blues). but you can get the 2x12 combo or halfstack for 1300k, last time i checked

hey, thanks for the quick response!
i have tried the vox ac30 and i loved it!
paired with a USA tele from the music store,
the tube-driven tremolo and reverb are sweet!
the only thing that holds me back is the fact that many people say that the quality is not the same due to the fact that it's made in china, while the fender twin is made in USA...
definitely not the ... ( 1 month ago by jhachey222)
definitely not the twin. it's way to loud for any application, unless you're playing Wembley or Budokan. i would go for a 40-50 watt max. so, something like a super reverb or the custom vibrolux (both 40 watts) or a fender deluxe reverb (22 watts).
but believe me, i was playing it (the deluxe reverb) in the guitar shop, and it was too loud at 3! it's a solid amp. and for $950, you'd have some cash left over for some other toys.
to tell you the ... ( 1 month ago by athemilkman)
to tell you the truth, i dont ever think ive even touched a twin! so i dont know how good it is and all. I wish i could say that the "made in china" thing will not make a difference compared to "made in britain" or "made in the usa", but i really have no idea. you'll just have to do a side by side comparison. Good luck!

I'd look around for a nice condition used Marshall RI Bluesbreaker.
