OK, this play is wonderful and so, but bizarre. "Not I" gives the word "surrealism" a face! ...OK, a mouth.

I often think of ... ( 9 months ago by thepoemlady)
I often think of first world war soldiers who came back mute from the war, having seen so much horror they literally could not speak. If they became psychiatric patients, the psychiatrists in those days would administer electric shocks to the tongue and eventually they would speak - to say "STOP!!"

I appreciate the spittle, but I think I like the Julianne Moore performance better - her delivery is more metrical. In any case, this is wonderful.

This is the definition of poor literature. It goes for artisitic merit by trying to be different. Instead it's just a poor spoken word piece which was declared genius because of its ability to confuse others.
I lack any respect for Thomas Beckett.

It attacks ... ( 8 months ago by yargenfreeman)
It attacks conventional sign systems - our perceived way of finding 'meaning'. It relates to his views on existentialism, in an albeit paradoxical way. If you don't understand it, don't comment on it. Especially if you're not sure on his name!
yeah, we have to do ... ( 8 months ago by randomness15)
yeah, we have to do this for performance evening, thankfully it's split into four parts, that would be difficult to do.
we had to figure out the meaning behind it aswell, even if you don't understand, and even if you don't like it, you can appreciate how difficult it is to learn those lines and deliver them with expression and over articulation. I think she did a fantastic job!
It all depends on ... ( 8 months ago by thepoemlady)
It all depends on whether you are able to appreciate symbols. If you only like realism then Beckett (Samuel that is) will not be for you. I guess symbols are outside your comfort zone.

This version is the original actress, Billie Whitelaw. Beckett wrote several pieces for her.

I'm very new to this stuff, but I would say that it is definitely what Beckett would have wanted for this peice. For those of you who are saying "he only wrote this to confuse" you are stupid. He wrote it so you would think. So you would create your own story and interpretation. This, to me, is the magic of absurdism. One must construct the story yourself under the conditions of the dialogue, and what you see.
Different. I love it.

I know you all love this, and I do to, but I'm just curious.
Exactly. I agree ... ( 2 months ago by blacksheep02)
Exactly. I agree with you when you say there was never any intention to confuse or misinform.
However, I don't think the purpose of the work was intended to be so malleable as you seem to believe. Beckett, of all playwrights, was very particular in how his works were to be preformed. That could only suggest that, to him, the "meaning" of the work was very specific too.
