Manhattan Transfer - Johnny Carson - Heart's-Unchained- 1982

Uploaded by: spockster59
Video Description:
I've actually found 3 Johnny Carson show segments where the group appeared. This is the second one which features Heart's Desire and Unchained Melody. Like the first tape, this is a 20+ year old VHS-EP speed done over the air on a mono-recorder. I believe it was 1982, possibly 1983. Tweaked the sound a bit different than the first segment I posted and I believe I brought the voices out a bit better. It won't win any rewards for audio restoration, but trust me, it's better than it was :)

GREAT version of "Heart's Desire." I really prefer Cheryl's performance here than the other ManTran video of this song with Laurel Masse. Even with the technical snaffu, Cheryl's version just show so much more style. She's a supreme vocalist.

I was in the audience of a Tonight Show in September 1982 which featured the Manhattan Transfer performing. This may be that show.

After a full viewing, I've decided it is indeed that show. Richard Benjamin was also a guest that night.
I also saw the previous day's show -- Richard Harris and Charlie Callas were the guests, and Carson did Carnac.

Cheryl is pretty awesome... she has an amazing set of pipes (and a gorgeous set o' gams too)... but I have the exact opposite opinion to the nice folks who like her performance best.
I think Laurel's version (especially on the original album) is so wonderfully innocent.. not to mention, chock-full of vocal chops. Laurel has such sweet heart felt tone.
Janis' middle eight is pretty spectacular in all three versions.

So on the original album version, who does the amazing falsetto ending? Janis?
I'd love to see the original TV show they did in the 70's.

There is NO comparison...Cheryl's version SOARS and is not FORCED. Laurel's tries to be like Janis and forces her vocal. And her end note, especially on the album, is just down annoying.
I agree that Cheryl's style is smoother and just better! I like Laurel, but Cheryl has, like someone else said, much more style.

Just to clarify, someone HAS ever done this before... that arrangement is a note-for-note duplicate of the brilliant 1963 version by Vito and the Salutations (check out video ID #22AYULnj0a8). Dallas barbershop quartet Acoustix then went on to duplicate MT's recording, bringing V and the S to a new generation :-)
