Hobo Living: Freight Train Hopping in New York State

In June 2005 I decided to go to New York to have a go at freight train hopping after having spoken to an online friend who used to do it many years ago. Even though I wasn't able to film the best parts of the trip (sneaking around freight yards at night, avoiding security, boarding moving trains and messing about on the tops of the carts at 50mph at night) I still managed to film a decent amount which I've edited into an 8 minute montage. One thing is for sure though, I'm going to do this again in a lot more depth with much better video equipment. Rock on!

This is something that should only be attempted by someone who is aware of the dangers. European freight trains are unsuitable: line speeds are higher, consists shorter (faster acceleration). Also the trains are probably watched more and then there's the hazard of overhead live wires. I've heard of many horror stories: One man literally caught fire in front of a station of passengers when he climbed on top of an intermodal freight & touched the overhead catenary energised at 25kV!!

this is a very educational video if you are learning how NOT to ride trains.
this is not hopping a trolley, these are freight trains. So if you feel like getting your fingers chopped off by feeling the wheel, which sometimes has teeth for dumb people like dave, then go for it.

Yes, Hopalonghobo is right. As the video clearly shows, my fingers get ripped right off when I touch the freight wheel for one second. I am dumb and Hopalonghobo is clever. He even managed to point out how freight trains are not trolleys but are in fact freight trains! Truly, Hopalonghobo is a genius! I am in awe of his unmatchable intellect!

Thanks for informing me that hopping freight trains is not completely safe, Dave. I appreciate it. However, you'll be pleased to know that I was already aware of this fact before I did it, whilst I was doing it and after I finished doing it. It was in fact because I was aware of the dangers that I managed to come to no harm! Pretty cool, huh!
