Hong Myung-Bo would be remembered as one of the most greatest defender in Korean football. He was perfect for the libero role in a three-man defense. His style of football can bring the ball up from the back and start attacks, while being solid at the back. He had great leadership and influence to the team. Also he had an amazing precision of striking the ball, which enabled him to score occasionally from mid ranges and free-kicks.
Hong Myung-Bo has played in four different World Cups('90,'94,'98,'02) during his 15 year career and has made 135 appearances for the national team.
Despite Korea didn't make it to the second round of '94 World Cup, Hong's play caught the eyes of European teams. Teams like Sevilla, Zaragosa, and Hamburger SV have shown interest in him ,but his affliated club Pohang did not allow their star player such move. In 96 Karlsruher SC and Sampdoria showed keen interest in Hong, but again Pohang didn't allow, by demanding exorbitant amount of fee. In 97 Hong makes a dubious move to the J-League side, Bellmare Hiratsuka.
On December he was selected for the EURO vs. World All-Star game. Facing European players like Zidane, Kluivert, and Boksic he shows the world what he is capable of. His play impresses Barcelona's Louis van Gaal. On May 98 Barcelona asks for Hong but dissonance between Barcelona and Bellmare leaves Hong with another failed attempt to play in Europe. Realizing that his chance to play in Europe will not happen, Hong signs three year extention with Bellmare, however in less than 6 months, the team was faced with financial breakdown. Due to financial problem Bellmare sells their highest paid players, Hong Myung-Bo and Wagner Lopez. Hong was then transfered to Kashiwa Reysol.
In 2002 World Cup, Hong Myung-Bo was captained for his national team and led his side to a historic 4th place finish. After the tournament he was awarded a Bronze Ball and got selected for 2002 WC all-star team. In 2004 he was selected in 'FIFA 100' among 125 greatest living footballers in the world.
Despite his dream to play in Europe has never been achieved, Hong Myung-Bo will no doubt remembered as one of the best liberos the world has ever seen.
