Genesis -- Old Medley PART 1 (drums by Jouxplan)

Video Description:
Ok, well, here is my INTERPRETATION of this fairly epic medley of songs from Genesis. I do not claim to be playing note for note; just trying to get the basic patterns and feel across for the various different sections of this 20 minute track.
I had to split this somewhere, for the purposes of fitting onto YouTube, and chose to go at the halfway point. Unfortunately, this means a split just after the hectic Firth Of Fifth intro, which is a shame -- sorry. The alternative was to split this in three, and I did not want to do that.
I had a big problem with my headphones just before recording this. They broke. This meant I had to drum to the music without phones, which has resulted (a) in a poor sound mix (b) music being too quiet and (c) I lose track of things at times, 'cos I cannot hear a fucking thing. Apologies for this. I think I am going to re-record at least Firth Of Fifth awkward intro, and upload that, just show how I would have liked it to come out.
I have heard that a lot of Genesis fans hate this 1992 Medley from the We Can't Dance Tour. I can see why this might be, but I have to say that it still is a feast of drumming by Phil and Chester, and trying to play along with it is just great fun!
So, where to start?
Dance On A Volcano -- it is amazing how many different ways that Phil and Chester seem to find to play this. Compare and contrast the Seconds Out version, or the studio version! Anyway, this shortened version of this beautiful 7/4 song seems to be relatively straightforward, compared to trying to cover the aforementioned versions! I have always liked those fast 24's or 12/8 rolls or whatever the hell they are though, in the chorus's of this version.
Lamb Lies Down -- Chester sets up a great groove on this live version, and I find it quite difficult to get it right. As usual, it is deceptive stuff by him. It seems simple, but it ain't! He plays some great laid back snare 16's at times, and I love the bass drum work. The outro section of Lamb here is fantastic. The way the backbeat moves from the 2 and 4 to the 3, and then that little off-beat snare thing, coupled with the awkward bass drum, especially the double hit where the second stroke lands under the snare! Really beautiful stuff, and damn horrible to play, in my humble opinion -- you can tell 'cos I pull some serious faces in this bit!
Musical Box -- The main thing here is that I don't think you can quite hear me singing along: thank God. Anyway, this is obviously a highly abbreviated version of this classic Genesis track. I don't play the same as Chester by any means -- in fact I am over-doing it a bit to be honest. Still, this is how I always feel I want to play this bit, so that's what you get. At least I didn't involve the second bass drum pedal.
Firth Of Fifth (Intro) -- This really is incredibly awkward to play, if you ask me. I don't know if both Phil and Chester were playing at the same time during this bit, but it sounds like they were to me. That said, I can well imagine Phil playing this by himself! Anyway, suffice to say that this is the hardest part of the whole 20 minute medley. Very syncopated start, then into something that might be in 7/4 but I haven't thought about it, really tricky hi-hat part at 8:40, even trickier snare work at 8:52, and then you have to come out of that section with a horrible fill at 8:58. It's a nightmare. Problem is, it is not over yet. Now you move into the weird fill zone, from 9:00 onwards. Got to hit those crashes, and do strange syncopated fills in between -- aarrgggghhh! And that one towards the end, at 9:18 is just horrific. Got to get that 4 stroke roll (where the bass drum is the 4th note) in, and then hit the snare and crash simultaneously at 9:21 ish - I found this all very, very difficult.
Anyway, out you pop, and you can settle into the easier section of Firth of Fith at last. See Part 2 of this YouTube post for more!
Hope you enjoy.
