Two vintage Star ... ( 1 year ago by dnm728)
Two vintage Star Trek promos! Trek was on Thursdays in its first season, then on Fridays in seasons 2 and 3. BTW, the penguin isn't really dancing - it's just flapping its arms to the Kaleidoscopic Peacock music.
Just amazing... ... ( 1 year ago by StooGP)
Just amazing...great quality, looks like it's right from the original 16MM! Thanks for posting this! And yes, the Tonight Show moved permanently to Burbank in 1972, however, there were a few times he did the show from there during his New York run.
The "TONIGHT SHOW" ... ( 1 year ago by fromthesidelines)
The "TONIGHT SHOW" opening is from 1968; the partial "TONIGHT" promo was from '67. The "HUNTLEY-BRINKLEY REPORT" opening title [with Bill Hanrahan as announcer] was used between 1965 and '68 (with sponsor I.D. added live during the broadcast). The special "TUESDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES" opening sequence {with penguin and Beatle caricatures} was seen only once, on October 24, 1967.

So thats why the Beatles appear! A Hard Days Night is both a Beatles song and movie. I'm a fan of the Beatles.

Is it possible to get a copy of the two Star Trek promos? Trade? Buy?
What was the original source for these...16mm? betasp? 3/4 betaumatic? They are so clear! Can we discuss? bbordelon2@gmail. com
The penguin is made ... ( 1 year ago by PunkTiger)
The penguin is made of win and win! Considering that NBC was *THE* colour network, I guess going back to black and white for a "special program" was a real let-down. Still, it shows NBC had a sense of humour about it.

Share Brilliance !! and you're right at the end about not so "Happy Feet" .. excellent irony.. NBC wanted all of America to go straight to color !! .. when in reality, as always, there was still plenty of good old stuff in B&W

Or even better, do the Peacock in HD.

About the networks ... ( 1 year ago by kimberlyKfnOphiEAGLE)
About the networks 'going color' CBS attempted doing color television on a limited basis with a system called "field Sequential" in the late 1940's and early 50's, the problem with it was that it was not compatible with all the black and white sets that existed at the time because the CBS system was mechanical rather than all-electronic. The first COMPATIBLE Color system was NTSC which was pioneered by RCA and NBC.

NBC was founded in 1926 by David Sarnoff. It was first owned by RCA, GE, and Westinghouse Corporations. Happy 81st Birthday NBC!!

Has anyone else noticed the (very primitive) similarity between the Tonight Show intro at 2:30 in this video, and the current intro for Late Night with Conan O'Brien - right down to the panning right, Rockefeller Center landmarks, etc?

NBC's rating are down 10% from last year, So they might not last much longer. At least we will still be able to watch these old promos!

I mistook that "If it's really special it's on NBC" as something from CBS in 1972. This is not scanimation (that didn't come until later) and the music may include analog synthesizers. That ident probably dates from 1965.

I love the first ident (the "Specal" one) and the "It all adds up to NBC" one.
the beeping noises ... ( 9 months ago by magnetotelluric)
the beeping noises in the background of the 'it all adds up' ident are recordings of actual people saying/singing "beep" over and over.
that is great.

What an incredible find. Thank you. Imagine-- a promo that INTRODUCES the original STAR TREK. (Such an industry itself some 42 years later.) Not to mention UNCLE, DRAGNET, THE TONIGHT SHOW, a very intriguing documentary on the increasing use of color for the entire network, the news, and the capper: a very funny, very droll, announcement of a special "in lively black-and-white," with the unforgettable NBC penguin!! Love the part where he tries to make his tiny arms bloom like the peacock!!
"Tonight Show" ... ( 5 months ago by dnm728)
"Tonight Show" intro mentions the late great Harvey Korman (R.I.P. Harvey).
Did Fred Collins ( ... ( 1 month ago by wmbrown6)
Did Fred Collins (who V/O'd the "Star Trek" series premiere as well as the ad spotlighting the making of a Perry Como special) ever do any local booth work for WNBC-TV in New York, and if so, in what time shift? I also recognized the voices of Mel Brandt, Wayne Howell, Bill Wendell and Bill Hanrahan - but noticed no promos voiced by Vic Roby or Howard Reig.
