thats not nerve i would wish to have. hes really disrespectful to his subjects. and he has the "nerve" to get pissed off if someone smiles or reacts to him being so intrusive. i cant believe hes a magnum photographer with this type of approach.

This guy is a total jerk. The photos he took are of no artistic and technical value at all. In other words, they are junk. He sounds totally into himself. He should be ashamed.

I agree, I think he is quite rude to stick the camera right into people's faces. He needs a slap.

I reckon he is VERY lucky person that nobody take him to the court.
I think he needs to learn some manner and NOT to stick the camera right into people's faces!

i think he does great photos
it's not important how - it's just a photo, when u go to the street u generally don't have a lot of privacy, so there is no use in blaming him that he's rude or something. he's just a good photographer.

How does he get away with it? Don't people get upset? I'd be afraid to shoot strangers... everyone's so paranoid these days, ya know? He takes nice photos but he's too intrusive about it.

He really hits the point. He's like a living camera without the clinched photographer as the limited element.

bruce gilden is one of my favorite photographers but i must say i was shocked/amazed to see this is how he does it. very intrusive indeed, but very sincere at the same time. anyway, these are the photos people will appreciate the most 50 years from now when they'll want to see what life/people/culture were like way back now :)
he is a really good judge of character since no one was offended.

i think one of the best thing about photography is that it's largely accidental. it's fun to be surprised by the result of a click.

You're right. It's the best feeling to get a nice 'accidental' surprise when you develop a picture. But that is called a lucky shot not for nothing. I think photography should be more on purpose or with an idea behind it then accidental.

I'm curious to know how he keeps all the photos in focus, especially on a camera like that Leica, which lacks an autofocus mechanism.
It's certainly not ... ( 11 hours ago by marosci)
It's certainly not the hyperfocal distance -- the backgrounds are in fact out of focus.
He just presets focus to 3-5 feet, uses a relatively small aperture and lets depth of field cover him.
